Hi Chris---- I'm currently using a de-tanked Pansy Chassis / boiler assy as the basis for a Dean Goods loco.....Whilst presenting my boiler to our club inspector for approval of a mod. ( Removal and blanking off the top-feed ) he mentioned that this Pansy Boiler design has an area that is not very well provided with stays ie}---- The flat area from just above the firehole door up to just under the regulator bush....At this stage of your construction you might want to consider adding some extra stays in this area ??........... Why not have a chat with your BI and see what the thinking is ??.............I had taken some photos and tried to upload them but apparently I have been banned from that website !!...............No idea why and no one to ask.....naturally !!! You are right that this area above the firehole door does not have sufficient stays ON THE DRAWING. But if you read LBSC's 'Words and Music' for Pansy, you will find that he describes 4 extra stays to be put into this area. Thanks Steve----hopefully Chris will have seen our chat and checked-out the "Words and Music" before going any further ??..........Could I ask a favour.??....Would you post on here a drawing showing the details of these 4 extra stays ie}--- location, diameter, pitch and pattern please ??.......Thanks.

The NEW version of Pansy is being done by Doug Hewson and is looking excellent. At one point David Clark of Model Engineer appealed for articles so I sent him my improved Hunslet which was easier to build and closer to prototype. Only to be told that "It was not what he was looking for. Also one covering Steam lines in China. Foreign articles would not be included? BUT I do remember the long queue to have a chat with him at Sandown!! Then with Diane lots of smiles and no complaints a year later. Martin is very approachable and very inviting to amendments to prevent models being abandoned. He is building a Pansy.
Alan, It is very easy to get banned from places by saying or doing things these days!!!! Technical term SNOWFLAKES.
David and Lily.

In the meantime I will make sure the stays are mentioned in the small live steam engines site page for Pansy. Might help someone.

My apologies - I was working from memory, and LBSC only suggested 3 extra stays above the firehole ring. They are the same size as all the other stays. Here is the piece of text from the "Words & Music". This was published on page 433 of the edition for 2nd October 1958.

I find it unbelievable that a critical error on the drawing was noticed by the designer in 1958 and not corrected. The same drawings are still being sold 63 years later without correction. No not unbelievable totally unacceptable

Alan when you get to Tiverton... Sorry Rackenford and beyond as it is out in the sticks. Have a look at the bases upon which the track posts rest on. Yes the steel mould made by me. Many of these also tamped in when I helped build. Again a SUPERB Track. Full of transition Curves and a superb way of track construction. The then Chairman being Ex Aircraft and Farnborough of course. Sadly missed. David and Lily.

As the Tiverton track has been mentioned, I will let you know of an unusual feature. There are no expansion joints!
The track (steel section on edge, and separated by bolts through tubes) is fixed to adjustable plates (to enable super-elevation to be set) and mounted on the concrete pillars that David mentioned.
These pillars, in turn, rest on concrete pads - but are not fixed to them. So when the rail expands & contracts, the pillars move on the pads.

Thanks for the info, yes I am changing some of the design areas including that particular area, adding some more stays there. The existing failed boiler I have was made by Malcolm Frost of MJ Engineering in IIRC 1983, this boiler has three (or maybe 4) stays above the Firehole door. Chris

Returned today from North Yorkshire Moors. Had a great week up there, lots if walking, enjoying the NYMR, saw some rallying in the Dolby Forest, visited Whitby, Robin Hoods Bay/ Boggle etc. While there popped in to TMC www.themodelcentre.com/about-us/Brought a few bits including a pot of Humbrol orange paint. I had a pot of Humbrol orange paint from the mid nineties which was brought along with other colours for building a few kits with my son. The paint was hopeless and wouldn’t cover in anything less than three coats. The finish on the model was rubbish and a real let down. Certainly didn’t inspire the youngster. That orange paint was tried again and still found to be hopeless. Needless to say the new one is fine. I wonder if the Humbrol I had was a poor formula which has been since revised. The little panel for the signal instrument is finished. The track section is now coloured orange. Signal instrument by GL5Keith1500, on Flickr The LED lamp holder is a length of aluminium and piece of paxolin. The opaque lens is a piece of plexiglass given a dusting of white primer. Our track at Clitheroe is similar, 4 steel strips bolted with spacers to give 5", 3.5" and 2.5". As the track expands it cam move on the supports, it actually moves sideways around the curves. Luckily most of the track is shaded under trees so does not get direct sunlight

For anyone interested the Track construction at Tiverton/Rackenford, used drilling jigs all marked for carefully calculated distances on the curves. The straight ones were easy!!!! Bolted up, the first section was held up in place on blocks and the mold suspended at a set height. Just like an open manhole. The area was dug out and hardcore placed in. Concrete was mixed and tamped in under the DECORATIVE 45 degree angles. Then left to harden the surface smooth.
Traditional houses in China and Japan are rested on small stone bases on a hard surface free to move during an earthquake. Posts on the outside. Walls of bricks only up to waist high, the rest above light timber or board. The bricks are to stop rats. But not to fall on people.
Back to Tiverton. Next week a post would be put in place and the mold freed and moved to its next position. Dig, Hardcore, concrete. And so on. I made up a dumper truck to convey the mix to the next position which speeded up progress. As had making 2 more post molds. 2 from Gravesend Club being returned. Spare posts always needed!! I think I made more base molds?
David and Lily.
Today I wrapped another wire round and soldered the ends for E-Beast. It was fraying at one end. Even more W. Heath-Robinson!! No GAS cookers were harmed during the 2 soldering operations. I heard that. Lily.

Went to the visitor's day at the Surrey Society yesterday.
Had the pleasure of meeting David Scott and other people I have met at previous events. So good to be able to resume these activities.
Have to say it was a very pleasant event, hospitality and help was outstanding, and a nice running track too. Apart from one shower the weather was very good too.
Pete.

We would have been there with Netta again but we're struggling to get fuel in S London at the moment and none of the members can justify 'extra' trips. It is a great track and the 2019 event was very enjoyable. Hopefully next year... Regards, Dan

Thanks, and already checking on the minutiae, and noticed that there could well be a book to be ahd detailing all the differences in the GE tender arrangements esp as regarding the extending of the RHS coal side. UNLESS everyone is a trick of the light and perspective. But as i have works drawing and photo evidence of at least another one similar to 61630 then i feel i am reasonably solid ground. And yes. a lovely selection of photographs

Just finished the coupling rods for my 5" Aspinall. Used laser cut blanks from MEL and what a time saver, the outside rounded bits were done with sanding drums and a small cylindrical grinding wheel in a Dremel, just sanded untill the little witness lines just dissapeared. The old boy who taught me filing is probably revolving in his grave!. Nice to have something actually finished, I'm at the stage where there's lots of part machined bits needing final finishing and fitting. hoping to have the chassis rolling by the end of the month ( thats doomed it then!) Everything I have had from MEL has been a real time saver, I think I would have given up on the tender chassis if I had to make it from scratch, either getting lazy or smarter. Dave
