Just back from a friends house... Sorry WORKSHOP as this is bigger than the house in the right proportions. Lovely day just chatting with Lily playing with the dogs in the garden. Several part built models with both of us in the same boat. WHICH MODEL TO CONCENTRATE ON FIRST???
Club running TOMORROW in the section of WHAT DID I DO TOMORROW.

Short session on the princess marina which came from an antiques shop... the boiler seems sound and the inspector is happy for bushes to be fitted where.needed . Removed the huge pump stay and the cylinders off the frame ready to grit blast them tomorrow.
Incedently it looks like the cylinders have been moving on the frame so they will need reaming out and time spending making bolts to suit the holes properly along with the surplus holes misdrilled being plugged and peened over so it looks presentable .
The frame extensions are on order and I've been fortunate to find some spare wheel castings which will go well for the trailing truck..
I bought this as a quick project and vowed not to do anything to the bottom end . Now I had covid the other week boredom overtook me and its now in pieces for a comprehensive rebuild and tart up...

My wife and I had a lovely day today on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway. We took the Seaside Special from Pickering to Whitby. Steam hauled by Black 5 from Pickering through to Whitby, 3 hours there left plenty of time for traditional fish and chips lunch followed by scones with clotted cream and jam all washed sown with plenty of cups of Yorkshire tea. Time for a walk up the 199 steps to the church and ruined abbey (all shrouded on a thick cold sea mist) then return to Pickering firstly behind a class 31 diesel to Grosmont then steam with a 9F to Pickering. Great day out.

After a full week of waiting a company has finally contacted me to tell me the part I've ordered isn't in stock. I've now ordered it on Amazon, who say they will have it here tomorrow.
I support smaller businesses where I can, but where they can't get the simple stuff right I regretfully have to fall back on the big monsters in order to hit my deadlines. I tried hard to keep my customers happy when I had my business, it's infuriating when others don't bother. This was their second chance too.

My problem was Barclays Business Bank would take forever to turn my payment cheques around-----being self-employed at Bridgnorth the SVR would pay me by cheque at the end of each contracted job... I'd then pop up into Hightown and deposit it .... Initially they would clear over a long week-end but after about a year they were taking anything up to a week or more !!.............With a small turnover and very limited cash reserves there was no way I could hope to get a Mortgage etc......Eventually I wound-up Bluestone Engineering and went to the local MoD workshops...... 18 years later I was able to take early retirement and haven't enjoyed myself so much.....

The laser cut grate parts for my new B1 grate arrived from MEL whilst on holiday last week, today saw them TIG welded together after a little fettling, my fault I made the slots exact size so a quick pass over with a small file soon had everything fitting snugly together. Hope to test it next week when I have annual steam test done. Chris

This lovely piece of kit arrived from Ed at Model Engineers Laser today, I love it, just what the doctor ordered... thank you, Ed. So does this mean that I can now start the King?.. perhaps a little longer yet, the reason being that we seem to be finally getting our act together and beginning the process of moving home. We had an estate agent around Tuesday who gave us an estimate of what the house is worth which, to be honest, blew my mind. Going by an email that I received today from Rightmove (we have been subscribed to them for a number of years now) I think the agent is right with his estimate and the info that he gave me. According to Rightmove, the housing market is selling houses faster now than ever before and growing in value to all-time highs, although they expect the bubble to burst a little next year. My agent told me that he confidently expected to be able to sell my house in 3 - 4 weeks, I now believe him. The plan now is to get the house ready for presentation in the next few weeks and put it on the market by end of May, there isn't much to do, the hall needs plastering and repainting, but that's about it. The agent said it would sell for his price anyway but I don't want pictures of my house online with the hall looking like a building site, plasterer is booked for Tuesday. This is a massive decision for us, we don't really do 'house moves' having lived here for over 40 years now, the challenge now is to find a house that we can love, it will be our final home. It needs to have the good parts of our current home but in a more rural area, it's time to get out of London, even if we are only currently on the outer fringes. London IMHO is no longer the place to live, to visit is fine but it's changing far too much to stay. We aren't going too far and will still be close enough to stay with the NLSME, currently looking at NW bucks and SE Beds. Stressful times ahead... Pete

Good luck with the move, I made a big move in 2018, sold up after 30yrs in the same house, moved to NZ. Had to rent for a couple of years until we bought land and built. We had been in there 18 months when we had a chance opportunity to by a larger block of land. We have just sold and will be moving next month.

Haha.. well to be fair, if I had my way I'd be going much further, perhaps Wales. However, my wife doesn't want to go too far from family in case I fall off my perch which would leave her alone, this I fully understand. There's also the fact of staying within commute distance of Moorefields. Pete

Snap on Coniston's new grate. This is the new one for the Super Simplex. We ordered them at the same time from MEL. In fact I had to do the dxf file for Coniston because Autodesk blocks Fusion360 from creating dxf's unless you have the subscription version. Just got to see if it works now. GRATE news all round. Number 5 s debit card had a very bad night last Tuesday at the RSME Auction with 108 lots to choose from. I studied the form and carefully watched the lots arrive over the weeks. Three items upon my list! Missed a superb presentation box of tools circa 1959. A GWR book of Locomotives. But soon had more than 3 and added to the list. The boxes of Brit Bits went for the reserve to number 5. With everyone sitting on their hands. One of The Wives nearly bought some tools by raising a glass of water... Her husband looking worried. And even more sat on hands for lot 108. She had arrived several weeks ago and when asked to do something seemed quite lively but needed more clothes. NO TAKERS. For the reserve of 1K the O1 went to no 5.
David and Lily. Also known as number 5.

Last coats of paint on Britannia's chassis today, with tomorrow and Monday earmarked for grit blasting more bits for priming later in the week.

Andover for us. 43 or 38 miles via the rural route. They had their Public Running and a 2 gazebo display. A wonderful NEW measurement. How big was the event? 15 Gazebos. Wow. 5 Gazebos.Are. Friend Steve who was guarding has a Chinese Wife so they chatted and looked after a very loud dog. Home via B and Q of course. We pass it on the way back so cant resist. 7 miles from us in Reading... The same as the Bank FOR NOW!!!

At the time my move from Reading ( Berks ) to Telford ( Shropshire ) was undertaken with some trepidation------ but I needn't have worried---- best thing I ever did.... A great county in it's own right and a good base for motorcycle tours if heading North---South---East----- or West.....PLUS}--- a huge range of various ME Clubs on tap as well.......and the SVR is only 20 mins down the road---- or Horsehay is 5 mins away....

Was scheduled for driving at Baggeridge ( Wolverhampton MES ) to- day-------friend Trevor collects me as usual----- all the Team for the day arrive------- then it starts raining quite steadily----------- there's no one in the local Park and Play area--------so we call it a day, close-up and come home----- as I type this the Sun has just come out !!!-------------------- grrrrrrr !!........ so it's out into the workshop and continue milling driving truck couplings for Oswestry...

Having moved to the country ten months ago I can thoroughly recommend it! Just resign yourself to the fact that the workshop will take a while to get back in operation. The one thing I would stress is get rid of not required stuff as much as you can before the move. Start that now before even putting the house up for sale. Due to time pressure in the end I just threw everything in the car and did 32 trips of 150 km each way moving the smaller items and materials from the workshop. What was neatly placed in a 18'*12' space now is just cluttering up the floor of a 30'*20' space and makes moving around impossible! If you can, the first think to go into the new space should be shelves and storage. So you can immediately put things into a logical place. We have no regrets about leaving Turin for the vineyards of Oltrepo. And with home working positively encouraged everything has so far gone to plan. Next job is to get the workshop back in action and a start on the railway. I have convinced the wife that we need a mini excavator to sort out the neglected garden. Now comes the fun of finding one at a price I can afford!
