It could be something like PB102 phosphor bronze. That goes copper coloured on the outside but is more golden coloured when you machine it. It could just be copper bar - I've got several lengths of various diameters that I acquired some years ago. I thought it might be useful for machining firehole rings for boilers.
John
Thank you John sounds more like the bronze certainly is not copper. It does as you say with the colour as I did machine a very little on the end after the photo was taken

Back at the Club for us digging, mixing mortar and helping with the first row of blocks. Impending heavier RAIN saw us beck under cover. A birthday and some more exciting Nibbles.
Needing petrol called in after as we pass them. Berkshire Metals. Lumps off the floor and cash from pocket. Thankfully the rain then stopped.
Glue another bit to the workshop cabinet I am making.

Visited the Wimbourne society of Model Engineers at their Spring Gala today. Rain kept the numbers down but what a professional outfit. Everyone we spoke to was very welcoming too. Shame it's a 5" gauge only track or I'd consider membership there.
On the was home went to the restored Shillingstone station for a Pasty which is still repeating on me now...

No work on the Rob Roy as I wanted to repair my woodworking bandsaw The first picture is what was left of the fence locking lever so that came out and used just as a rough pattern as I made a new lever from scratch. I did however make a start on a jig/fixture to quarter the wheels more to come later in the Rob Roy thread DSCF2514 by Dalboy, on Flickr And the completed new lever in place and another job ticked off the around tuit list. Morning spent down the club drilling holes in then princess marina conversion and an evening plugging holes in a lassie boiler and filling it full of water.
Really must come up with a name for the marina conversion

Buyer beware. Whilst machining new valve bobbins for my Lassie, to John’s words and music, I kept getting inconsistent cutting. Looking closely I could see the cutting tip in the holder moving sideways during cutting. Thinking this was due to a loose tip bolt I tried to tighten but to no avail. I backed the screw off a little and found i could slide the tip back and forth sideways. This measured about 6deg. I could get a 2thou feeler gauge between the tool and tip faces, as shown, when the screw was fully engaged. Beware the cheap ebay tool holders, being fair i have also two other types that are 100%, i know this as i have just carefully inspected them. I will now check any new holders before use.

John, I had a holder some while ago with a similar problem. I tinned the inside faces with silver-bearing soft solder and then had a perfectly-usable cutting tool so it may be worth a try. If I can find it I will take a photo but I use a different set now and haven't seen the old one for a while.
Regards, Steve

A couple of days not working directly on the Rob Roy but some of the jigs/fixtures also making some t nuts for the rotary table which I will need soon as well as flatten a piece of ali plate to mount some parts on for machining. This all seems very familiar a bit like having to make loads of jigs and fixings from when I make the wooden models.

So today I went and picked up the mini excavator. And now the fun starts.... First thing is how to work the controls.

Still chasing my tail while making the T nuts for the rotary table I discovered that I could do with a vice stop for repeat jobs so have started that so I can complete the t nut so I can then use the rotary table to make parts for the Rob Roy, does this sound familiar.

I spent today repairing the tailgate latch on my Range Rover Classic in preparation for taking my austerity to the club on Sunday for first steaming and steam test. The rest of today was spent trying to make the right indicator work!

Not just today but over the last few weeks I have done the following while preparing the house for market. Outside rear garden has been given a fresh coat of paint including both workshops, pond surround, rear doorstep and damp course layer, all woodwork stained. Rotten tongue and groove panels around the pond have been replaced/painted. Patio slaps lifted, repositioned and fitted with sand pushed in the gaps ( this was more to get rid of old bags of sand than anything else). Pond drainage and water pipes have been laid under the slaps, drainage termibating at an old drain. Said drain has had an opening cut into it for the drain pipe to feed in to. Top was then covered with an old floor tile. Small white stones have been laid around the two water drains to finish. Inside has been just as productive, hall and kitchen have been plastered and then painted, gap above fridge/freezer has been panelled. Coving fitted in the hall, pvc trim around front door, new skirting in hall. Today ( as I type) I am sanding down the banisters and repainting. Jobs left to do are repainting front window exterior, repair damaged window hinge and fit new 3m curtain pole to front window. Oh and also a new double glazed window pain has been fitted to the kitchen window.
If I get the rest done by end of next weekend I'll get the agent to send his team around to take photo's.
Had a text from him Tuesday saying that a house 2 streets away that had it's launch day on Saturday was sold by Tuesday , slighting bigger house than mine but according to the agent nit as well presented as mine and this was before all the extra work had been done which he hasn't seen yet. Housing are selling very quickly right now and generally for more than the advertised price as buyers put in their bids.
Fingers crossed mine sells quickly...I then need to find a new home after 40+ plus years here....gulp!

Don't houses sell quickly if they are low priced, and slowly if they are high priced? With all the work I might have to do on mine, I think that it is better to go out feet first, at 81 years old it might not be to long ahead?
best of luck

One job ticked off before getting back to the Rob Roy. Mind you there is still one more to do which I needed this one for. And that is a stop for the milling machine vice as I have multiple parts to make for the rotary table and this was one that I should have made before now as I knew I would need it.
It is only a basic design but should do the job required of it

Hi Delboy, your vice looks the same as mine, I drilled through mine at the tow, in your photo that slot under your stop bar, that way I can mount my vice on its side, which is very useful for some work, perhaps an idea for the future?
best wishes

I have not yet examined all the different ways I can use this vice, I do know that the jaws can be moved around to allow for larger widths of material to be gripped.

What did I do today? I broke my own standing start 1Km and standing start 2km speed records for an up to 1650cc production bike. 184.1mph and 199.223mph. I also raced my Ninja H2 over the same distances in the 1000cc supercharged production bike with speeds of 186.825mph and 202.192mph

Well ,attempted first steaming of my austerity at the club today and had a number of issues the most difficult being the petticoat pipe falling into the smoke box I am not sure how it is meant to be secured so I have asked the question. Also a piston gland unscrewed itself blocking the cross head so stopped play for the day. At least it passed the accumulation test so it has its boiler certificate😃

Got back into my Tich build after too long away from it and made the lifting arms. Waiting for a new potentiometer for my mini lathe so rather than sit around I decided to do some milling jobs with the valve gear
