I believe that is precisely why many BR Standards received flat rods in place of the original H section fluted ones - more sideways flexibility.

Enjoyed the mini-rally at Hereford. Engine went well, just need to sort the clutch on the lubricator because that wasn't working.
Only thing is I took Cocodamol tablets before going and I don't think I'd have coped without them.
Not sure that's a great way to enjoy a day out steaming!
Pete.

I think Pete a day out once in a while is a good excuse.
So far today degreased the boiler cladding bands, ready for blasting, and spray painted barrel and firebox cladding in primer.
Hope to get smokebox degreased after British GP qualifying then first coat of black on underside of tender tank before preparing my r/c car for racing tomorrow.
Regards,
Dan

I went steaming today, the locomotive ran beautifully all day. I think they behave better when polished.

Over the weekend we went a walk with the Bald Explorer, he has a You Tube channel and an acting background coming up with such childhood gems as Snug and Cozie who are inept spacemen lost of course and crash into a Furniture Store. 2 seasons and also up on You Tube. However on our way back called in to see how 1501 was getting on. 2 cups of tea and lots of chat saw her in the flesh Just Superb.
Sunday saw us dodge rain clouds over Readings Public Running. Unloading, banished to the car park and help loading. A lovely class 66 in 7 1/4 which just fits the unloading table. 4 huge battery's so will shift any train. Put a pair on our Beast!!!

Today I ordered a new plunge-type DTI, one of those flexible magnetic stands ( my son introduced me to these, time I got my own) and also an extension probe... I wonder what's next on my list of jobs to do for 4472... Pete

On Sunday I specially took my Calor Gas bottle and torch to silver solder a crank shaft that I am fabricating and to help out a member who needed a fitting repaired. The bottle decided to run out on me without warning, so I am left with a cooked, but not soldered crank shaft, that now must be recleaned. Fortunately we had a small gas torch with disposable cylinder knocking around the club workshop. There was just enough gas to do the members small fitting so he was a happy bunny. The only good thing is now I can replace the empty bottle and know that I have a full one!

After recently suffering from a back injury i thought i would add a lift inside the workshop. A couple of wood cross beams reinforced with some reclaimed steel box section, a traverser assembled from a couple of steel plates and four wheels from a set of castors, and cheap haltrac type pulley lift. I can now lift a loco off the bench spin it 180deg , move it across the workshop and drop it on the rolling road. I can also lift a loco to enable me to attach the rotisserie without effort. A worthwhile days work, wish i would have done it years ago.

The first part of today's order has arrived, this being the stand, I love this type of stand as you can manipulate the arm into any position which then locks by turning one knob, much better than the other type I have where you have to lock the arms independently. This stand is also much smaller than my other types, ideal for clamping to the loco frames for the next upcoming job, I have placed it on the latest 'Turnout' mag to give an idea of size.... The DTI will be here tomorrow, I have chosen an electronic one this time which can measure imperial or metric, the extension probe has also been despatched so hopefully will be here in the next few days. I'll post pictures when they arrive. Pete

Having survived the car parking of Sundays Public running we returned for a Wednesday of bashing out an old window and replacing the hole with bricks. These ancient windows are teenage sized as the latest break in saw all the chocolate vanish.
Many years ago I was on the committee of Plymouth Model Engineers as we came up with a Mini FORT KNOX. Yes they were in the middle of a Council Estate on top of an old rubbish tip. First thing to do was 100,000 tons of road spoil as they dug out a hill just past the Police station. Then plant far too many trees. Iron plates cover windows and doors. The roof is solid and storage under for carriages. These are serviceable but very rough so are the Club locos. Not sellable.

This is something that I have wanted for some years, when I saw that Simon Hudson (Steam Workshop) had published a new edition of Doug Hewson's excellent book last week, I immediately ordered a copy which arrived this morning. Some late night reading ahead... Pete

Three years ago, I made a post HERE and thought it appropriate to republish the picture of a horse's arse again today. Still relevant. Regards, Steve

Yesterday I may have found a publisher for my planned book on 4472's build, looks very interested. It will be a few years yet but possibly some exciting times for the future...🙂

Thank's for the head's up Jon, I'm very impressed with this one's latest publication and I happen to have met the guy in person some years ago at the Nottingham Pacific rally. Always worth having other contacts to fall on though... Cheers Pete

Well...the end of an era is getting closer...today I accepted an offer for the house so we are now STC, or Sold subject to contract. We should be excited but instead we are scared stiff of the coming change. The most important thing on the agenda now is to find our new home...no joy yet...lol

Hi, I had some Ali (25mm) water cut for a DTI holder to fit straight on to my QCTH. Saw the idea on Pragmatic Lees youtube site, he had seen it on Thomas Knack Knacks site So mounted this way it for side one to the work in the chuck DTI by Kerrin Galvin, on Flickr And by turning the DTI over it mounts this way & works on the end of work DTI by Kerrin Galvin, on Flickr By a little bit of luck a 5mm capscrew with a washer under it screwed in tight puts it pretty much on center, oh there's also a speed handle water cut from Ali (12mm) at the same time for my vise. After reading a request on another thread about angle iron & how lucky you guys in the UK are at being able to get smaller than 20 x 20, I've been making some 11.5 x 11.5 & 13.2 x 13.2......they are going to be over thick at 2.5 instead of 2.2 but hey as i have LOTS to make thining them down was going to be a step to far! So heres my setup.... the thin ali strip is the fence i had made when i did my table upgrade to the bandsaw.... turning into a great upgrade!, this is set a bit more than the required width of angle, the ali strip is then brought up to be a nice fit against the angle, & away you go! I found that having a vacuum cleaner setup removing the swarf helps to reduce / stop the angle jamming. DTI by Kerrin Galvin, on Flickr In the gap is a piece of 20 x 20, sitting on the ali strip is a cut down piece, the odd bit of steel on table was grabbed out of the saw scrap...errrr come in handy bin...hit with my cheep belt sander to take off the sharp corners & used as a pusher stick. Once cut then into the mill vice, with a creative pile of parallel's, thanks to Joe Pie, to machine to size. They are about 1.5 mm wider than required....possibly i could get them closer but its working fine DTI by Kerrin Galvin, on Flickr The short ones....still 180 mm are going fine, I've got a couple of 350 -400mm to do, the bigger challenge is the 2 x 1500mm ones...the full size loco has these in 2 parts might have to think about it a bit! Cheers Kerrin

We were still sorting out all the bits that managed to sneak into the car at Rugby over the weekend. Just for a challenge got the rear laser cut stay out and got it fitting together. Re worked the coupling hook pin bosses to be a double press fit to save soldering it in place. Have to make the steam brake holder next so there is no quick project. The cut bits went together well.

Wall building at the Clubhouse so we can get rid of Window Tax. NO. Stop small bodys getting in and nicking chocolates again. Came home with 9 bricks worth of Muck. They were soon in place. Cleared 4 boxes of brambles once the temperature had dropped to Light Straw!!! About 9.00 P.M.
Sorting a Nigel Gresley to do list, so we have a chance to get her ready for The Main Line event at Rugby. Heavy beast so this is why we need the transport and lifting device.
