Finally did a job on the lathe that’s been on the “round tuit” list ever since I’ve had it! Well you can’t rush things right?
I’ve got an Emco V10 & the change gear door hasn’t closed ever! At some time in its life the threaded stub has been broken off at the plate. Some time back on the Emco group it was mention that someone else had this issue & had used a coupling nut to fix the issue, sounds like a good idea, checked my local hardware store at the time & you guessed it any size but the one I wanted!
Had to go there again today & thought I’d take another look…. Still no 6mm nut! However there was either 3/16 or 1/4” I grabbed a 3/16” one. Drilled taped it 6mm, counter sunk both ends, set up the plate & machined what was left of the stub off, drilled it clearance & counter sunk it. Chopped a 6mm counter suck screw to 5 mm, reduced the original bolt by 3 mm … job done! Well almost maybe…. may put a knob on the screw as I have a hate for needing to grab an Allen key if it doesn’t need to be tight.
Cheers Kerrin

Spent the day converting the MX5 I've just picked up to hand controls. Probably my tidiest conversion yet. It really helps having a milling machine! Nice little Mk1 import with possibly the worst paint job I've ever seen. So at least it matches my locomotives!

I have recently added a vertical digital rule to my old Centec mill. Recent work to replace the oil seal meant removing the quill. I took the opportunity to drill 6no 4ba holes on a pcd. I then made a bracket to anchor the rule to the quill. This used just three of the 4ba holes. The bracket was made from 2mm steel but felt a little flimsy so I added so 4mm webs to stiffen it up. The top bracket simply anchors the digital head to the large bolt. The large bolt is a post that limits the travel of the quill upwards. Very nice example and he's thrilled to bits. Security at Yeovilton often recognise him apparently. Pete.

Just been making a jig but had do it twice as I drilled a set of three holes incorrectly. I measured twice etc but got caught out by the digital vernier being out by 5.08mm. It hadn’t zero-ed probably or if it did it had jumped by this magic 5.08.
I sometimes get this error occurring on my homemade DRO especially when turn on or off the mill. So,the question is why 5.08? Does anyone else get this strange event.

We had our team event at work today and I gave a 25 minute presentation with a brief history of model engineering and the work I had done on restoring Britannia. Good feedback so might get a convert or two Regards, Dan

Today finally made a start on the left intermediate coupling rod for my loco, made the right hand one in November but full size engineering has got in the way since then. It might not look much at the moment but it brightened up my day to create some swarf for myself stage_2 by Carl, on Flickr

Went to the Tonbridge Model Rail Show 2024 today and caught up with the town's Model Engineering Society who fortunately are a lot more secure on their track site after the recent council deliberations over the future of the Angel Centre (where ironically the exhibition was being held!). Not quite what I've done today but what Jess (the better half) did a month ago today - she did an amazing job of bringing Oscar into our lives. Untitled by Adam Cro, on Flickr Been quite the experience for the last few weeks and I'm now back at work, some how I have managed to find a few hours in the workshop but I can't see that happening too often! Finding sunglasses passport and other bits ready for a trip to Australia. Melbourne to see my tennis coach son and then Brisbane to see family.
Looking forward to cream tea in Botanic gardens, watching trains at Southern cross and exploring the city again. Then over at Brisbane seeing the water dragons in Oakmans lagoon and enjoying the Southbank.
Any suggestions on some good railway visits would be appreciated. I hope to pop up to the rail museum at Ipswich, so anything along those lines.
Thanks Keith

Enjoy your trip Keith. I'm on the other side - Western Australia, but would maybe suggest contacting 'Oily Rag' of this parish modeleng.proboards.com/user/3685 as he is in Brisbane and does both full size and model steam.
