I made the "simple" version. Annoyed with myself for forgetting the procedure. It was all going too well!

Well I seem to be getting the hang of an offset hole which is running true through the bar.
The axle pump eccentric just needs the fixing hole.
I am now making the valve eccentrics in pairs.
Assuming each pair has the same (hopefully very small) error, what is the correct way to pair them up on the axle?
I assume it would be forward and reverse but could be wrong.
Pete.

Herewith completed eccentrics. Not perfect by a long way but I reckon I stand a fighting chance of things eventually working. Just the holes to drill and tap. Pete.

Thanks for positive comments.
Will do the holes and then time for a workshop clean up as I am the messiest person ever.
After that the wheels are next on the list. I will buy laser cut coupling rods so providing the quartering goes well I may have a rolling chassis in the not too distant future. It will then be time to put some paint on it.
I took the boiler to the club a few weeks ago. It is commercially made, CE etc, and was a good price. Glad to say no adverse comments, in fact, very positive. I must check the dimensions as I have read the B1 saga and don't want to hit those problems!
Pete.

Having removed a pile of crap from around the lathe and mill I am preparing to machine the wheels.
The counterweight part of the casting cannot be turned over its full area as the boss for the crank pin extends too far towards the rim of the wheel.
I guess I could mill the counterweight flat at a later date, but I notice on some photos of complete Juliets that the counterweight is left partially unmachined.
What do you knowledgeable types do?
Pete.

Hi Pete,
To do the counterbalance weight I crank the lathe part way round by hand. Labourious but quite easy. Or you could mill it but not something Ive ever done.
Cheers, Julian

Hi Pete. It has been some considerable time since I machined my wheels so I am not sure how I finished the weights but believe I used a file. Upon checking the drawing it appears there is only about 1/32" of overlap so I can only assume that I went right up to the boss and then took the last bit off the weights by hand. If this is the same on your castings then Julian's method would not seem to arduous and should produce a respectable finish. Of course the quality and dimensions of the castings may be different so you may have to resort to milling. Regards Paul.

I see your club are having a run on Monday Bank Holiday. Very tempted to go if it is nice weather. Are you likely to be there? Pete.

sorry to highjack your thread, but I have reconciled the interruption as possibly being of interest to you also. How is the eccentrics accurately set? It appears to be slightly less than 90 degrees from back dead centre?

Hi Brian, They are just placed on the axle loosely. I paired them up closely so I could check they were all square. Remarkably they are with no daylight! Pete.

Well I am making "progress" I hope.
Have machined the boss, rim and counterweight and also the back so the overall depth is 7/16" as per drawing.
I was expecting the spokes to appear whilst machining the back but they didn't.
So I plunged on in and there they are. I have left a "boss" about the diameter of the front boss, and also a rim. Just a few more cuts to do tomorrow to open out the gaps between spokes evenly.
The axle hole is ready for reaming.
I will do the other 3 to this stage before looking at the tread/flange area.
Pete.

Well more than 2 years later and we are underway again. Some medical drama got in the way in June 2016!
The 4th wheel is in the 4 jaw as I type and I have started the front of it. The other 3 are all done on the fronts. Noticeably they get better each time I do one. Will do the backs next and then make a mandrel for tackling the flanges and treads.
Pete.
