P.S. regarding setting the vice true, I machined the edge of my smaller machine vice, and by placing the machined edge against a square across the milling table, it is set square.
Not as precise as the way Roger sets his stuff up with a 'clock', but for most purposes, it is more than adequate.

I bought a cylinder honer and have achieved a nice tight fit for a 1" diameter brass bar right through the cylinder. I then re-honed and got a reasonable crisscross pattern on the bore.
As advised I have started milling the portface. Will get this somewhere near complete and take the cylinder out of the vice to establish a centre line.
Hope we have seen the last of the awful weather now as I have chiefly been hiding in the house.
Pete.

Completed the portface and the bolting flanges.
With a few strokes of a fine file around the cutout it fitted into the frame snugly.
It most certainly isn't going to be to the standards some achieve on here but it doesn't look like there are any gross errors.
I don't know whether to crack on with the passageways or do the other one.
Pete.

Excellent news Pete...in reference yo your last comment, I'd get both to the same stage before moving on to the next, do the other while what you did is still fresh in your mind... That's just me though, it's your loco Pete, whichever you feel best with should always be your choice..

That's just me though, it's your loco Pete, whichever you feel best with should always be your choice.. Pete I think you are right. I work very slowly and am likely to forget how I did it. I need to consider holding the work to drill the angled holes and that will probably take me weeks just to think about it! Maybe I will do Mona (inside cylinders) to this stage as well which will require a different method. Pete.

Pete,
I am at a similar stage with a set of Rob Roy cylinders. I think they might be very similar to the Juliet but it just shows that there are more ways to skin a cat.
I filed an edge and the port faces so they didn't 'rock' then machined one of the ends in a large milling machine vice. The end and edge was then used to set the block up for a boring bar between lathe centres. I tackled the port face and mounting flanges using the bore as a datum (measuring from a close fitting plug in the milling vice) with plenty of DTI checks.
Port slots next for me.

For no particular reason I have been working on the crankpins rather than cylinders in the last few days.
I decided to have a go at using tool steel - the previous owner of the lathe left a lot of shapes and sizes so have selected one and shown it to the grinder for a bit of sharpening.
Will see what results I get tomorrow!
I will be totally amazed if I get the chassis to roll long but am edging towards finding out.
Pete.

Well the tool steel worked very well.
One crank pin complete with a threaded end.

I use Flickr also. I bet the parts Pete made are something like this. Photos are such an important part of online forums, especially if you are making something. If you don't know how to do it, take the time to learn. We will all benefit from your effort.

My attempt at 1/4ing the wheels.
Will sort out the coupling rods and see what happens next.
