So I have my eye on a Juliet which has been in storage for 25 years. Very well build, the problems is it has been build in 5 inch and not 3 1/2 inch as per LBSC original design. I think this picture says it all. Is there any other persons who have or know of a Juliet in 5 inch. I am taking it to our local club tomorrow to have the boiler checked out and see if it can be run. Lets hope the inside is as good as the outside

Hi Ken, Nice looking loco! Would think there is no problem with it being 5", unless of course you don't have access to a 5" track!. Pretty sure I've seen several 5" ones here in New Zealand. Unfortunately none in my local club, so no help there. May be somebody else from NZ will be able to help.
Cheers Kerrin

It could be a version of Kennions/GLR's 'Chub'.

So took delivery of the engine this afternoon. There does seem to be a problem, It must have had a rider coach which worked with it as the injections draw water off a pipe sticking out the back of the engine. And there is no hand pump at the water tanks, which I presume was also in the rider coach. Sadly all other engines parts etc were disposed of 25 years ago and nobody can remember who brought what. So may have to build a rider coach sometime. Also no spade and there is no ash-pan under the grid.
But I am still very happy with the engine. So off the the local club tomorrow, which is called the Western Province Live Steams based here in Cape Town and is only 20 mins ride away. I will be taking a friend with tomorrow who's claim to fame is being a pro photographer and has some heavy equipment which should give me some good pics to show.
So yes I am looking for some drawings for a rider coach

Hi Ken,
as you are aware a rider coach is a must since that is the vehicle that carries you the driver. You could use this as the vehicle for carrying the extra water and coal that you will need to make a full circuit of the track particularly if it is long and include an emergency hand pump. Since ready access to coal and water is required during motion I would make a tender to suit the locomotive which can be designed specifically for this purpose and have the driver's trolley designed specifically for the driver and additional passengers if required. Just something to think about.
I note that your locomotive uses Walschaerts valve gear and the valve chests are outside whereas the 3 1/2" gauge uses slip eccentric valve gear with inside valve chests. Juliet in 3 1/2" is quite powerful for its size so you can expect a good performance.

Hello Ken,
I think you'll find the locomotive is an Ajax, a good old Fred Stone design now marketed by Reeves 2000. We often pulled Fred's leg (the good one not the wooden one) by calling it a Vim! The certainly go well.
Regards,
Bob

Thanks Bob
I have changed the thread name to entice more feedback from people with info on the Ajax
The cab is not quite the same and can be miss leading
I did get to steam her on Saturday and even did two runs around our club track. Very simple to run but will need to practice before I try pulling passengers
And the rider coach is a must and I am already planning one

Ken,
If you go to the AJ Reeves website and look for the crosshead under AJAX (it's on page 1 of the parts listings)you will find a partly dimensioned drawing of the finished cross head casting. With these details and the bits you have you should have enough information to make a new one.

Yes the Reeves web site is superb for FREE DRAWINGS if you can make do with one elevation.
We could have a challenge of Build a Locomotive using only ones from Reeves web site he jokes.
We met several small 0-4-0 locos and they certainly go well and are driven through most of the day. Says he just getting into sorting out a Jessie. Just different tanks in a saddle.
David.
