An Additional BedstopAll this talk of longitudinal accuracy and DRO's made me look hard at my methods, and I decided that although a G-Clamp on the RHS acts as a bedstop when using the milling head, it isn't very artisanal, so I made a new stop this afternoon! I also wanted a job for my new FB-2 mill head and collets, which, I must say, is an absolute peach to use. Four hours later I have this: it's the one on the left... Hi John, Looks good. Got one on my every growing to do list! You want to be careful, you’ll be upgrading to 50 mm DTI mounted on the stop.........then it will be one short hope to a digital vernier & then low & behold, DRO!
Cheers Kerrin

I agree , although I do have digital readout (modified digital calipers) on my machines I much prefer to set the stops where possible , makes life so much easier not having to watch a dial etc. Dan.

Having a real DRO on a lathe is much like other things in life... if you haven't tried it you don't know what you are missing Jo P.S I have 7 DRO's fitted across my lathes and milling machines

The whole point of a stop is exactly that ! it is a stop and nothing has to be read. On my tiny machines with hand feed I prefer to watch the cut. Dan.

Dan I have stops as well: But with a DRO you zero on the end, cut to just short of the point you want, lock your stop to trip the clutch on the power feed and you can then plunge in with other steps not bothering with looking at the DRO.
You still have to finish the face even with a stop and the one last cut up the face leaves a perfect finish at spot on the right distance, none of this pratting around with measuring devices trying to set the stop in the first place or checking the stop didn't move during cutting is needed as you can see exactly where it stopped each time on the DRO
Real DROs are a total unnecessary gadget: which I would not be without
