Afternoon everybody
HELP
Can anybody out there advise where I can purchase stainless steel 5BA nuts.
They appear to be like the proverbial "hens teeth".
Regards
Malcolm

Depending on how many you want, EKP Supplies of Barnstaple will do specials. They do 6BA and 8BA stainless so producing 5BA is no problem for them, but quantity might be. I know for special length hex head screws they require an minimum order for 500 to make it worthwhile setting the machine up. I would guess it would be the same for special nuts.

Hi Bob
Thanks for your suggestion.
But, I've tried EKP and they can't (wont) do.
Bit surprising as it was them that supplied the 5BA studding I bought from them recently.
I can get steel and even brass full nuts in 5BA from many suppliers but no stainless as yet.
I think it was Julian who told me that Don Young and many others of the prolific designers never actaully built their designs and left it to us to sort out these peculiarities.
Perhaps Roger has the right idea and metricate everything. It would be easier but I'm not that clever.
Cheers anyway.

Hi Jason
Yes I saw this as well. I need minimum 38 pcs. So at 1.60 each plus p&p it starts to become expensive.
Thanks for looking

How about using M3 which is pretty close and you can get just about any head and material you like, including ME reduced heads from Knupfer in Germany? These things are only going to get harder over time, so maybe it's worth using standards that aren't obsolete?

Get some free cutting stainless hex and make your own? I certainly would if they were £1.60 each! John

Actually 7/32" AF is exactly right (0.220"/0.216") for 5BA nuts according to my 1962 copy of British Standards Workshop Practice.

If you can get 316 stainless, either L or J, it has better corrosion resistance than 303, which is really classed as 'corrosion resistant' under mild environments, rather than 'rustless'.
The company I served my draughting apprenticeship with, made straight line windscreen wipers for ships. We used 316 stainless almost exclusively as it was totally rust free in a marine environment. 303 and 304 did show some discolouration eventually, in a marine environment so was rarely used except for internal parts that were reasonably protected. So if a salty environment is present, try getting 316. If it is for an inland environment then 303 or 304 is OK.

Agreed, but if I was drilling and tapping dozens of 5BA nuts I'd be using free cutting 303 and s** the rust potential!
