Despite not being finished I took the loco to the club today for a steam up and ended up taking it around for a couple of laps. It went well, and nothing fell off. I think for an initial run it was a very good one - no trouble to speak of. Some leaks I already knew about and that was about it. It went backwards and forwards and steamed well (as you'd hope with a brand new boiler!) so I'm greatly relieved.
The paint on the smokebox looks very unhappy but I'll live with it.
Now for some numbers and a few other things that I keep forgetting about.

Congratulations David. I’ve seen the video and it sounds pretty right to me. A great achievement.

Looks good and runs well for something that you have said is a total disaster and the worst job ever. You should be proud of yourself to have been the only one of the 8 builders who have started this project, to have ALMOST finished. Now PLEASE David, FINISH THE THING OFF PROPERLY. You are more than capable to do it.

Thanks Barry - I was really pleased that it basically all worked first go.
I think I figured out why the reversing screw is so stiff. It was because I had to extend the shaft due to the boiler firebox being too long. The old shaft was cut and the extension silver soldered in and isn't quite straight so it's probably binding in the bush and will need to wear the bush out. Or the bolt holding the reach rod to the reversing shaft arm is too tight - it's really difficult to get in or out. Either way a tool as you describe should make it a lot easier.
Because I've already forgotten and the topic was also mentioned on Roger's thread, what do you call the thread you use to simulate asbestos wrapping on the pipes, and what do you use to stick it on - superglue or epoxy?
I tried to find cotton tape like Roger has but can't find it less than about 5mm wide either in shops or on ebay.
Still not starting another project until this is properly done.

Well done David! 1 in 8 is fairly representative of builds vs completions in general. Finishing and running puts you in the top 15%! You can be very proud of that!

The lagging is crochet cotton. Available from the craft shop opposite IGA in Presley street.

OK, I have the crochet cotton. I've made a start on the fall plate between loco and tender. I think it's 0.75mm steel. I made a 'riveting' tool from a piece of 2.5mm brazing rod and a centre-drilled short end of steel. The bumps were marked with a rule and punched by eye without a fence but they turned out pretty well.

Onto the hinges for the fall plate and the cab floor. I tried a few ways of making hinges but I don't have any small tube and even if I did, soldering it to tiny bits of brass isn't any fun. I bought the smallest hinges I could find and cut/filed then down. I'll use 1/32 rivets to hold them to the fall plate and cab floor. The cab floor is 'Tasmanian Oak' which is very soft and light. Not what I was looking for, but what was available. They're 20mm wide strips and I used a 30deg V cutter to cut grooves down the middle of them.

That's a neat solution you have hit upon for hinges on the fall plate David.
All up I think we'd all agree you're doing a great job in creating a fine scale model of the NSWGR 'B' class mogul. You should be very pleased with what you've achieved so far.

Tried to put the whistle on today... The only length of copper tube that fits the unions looked like it would be long enough. but fell short by about 30mm. I will temporarily bodge it with a sleeve of larger stuff. Not sure who built the seats with their dummy bolts unaligned like that, must have been a Friday afternoon job.

Looks great David and the detail such as the staff holder on the cab side adds to the model's 'authentic' feel. I've recommended your thread to another modeller building a 24 Class.

Should do. It's in a state of disarray at present, I took the handrails etc off to spray some black paint around the boiler to try and cover all the places it fell off. Then I tried to connect up the whistle, found a piece of pipe just long enough, and found it wasn't quite long enough. Going to hack up a sleeve for now until I get more of the pipe.
Jim, who's the other builder?

When the weather warms up a bit I hope to bring the 400 class railmotor over for a test run. Must ask Jason what the dates of the play days are.
