Update}-------- I had forgotten to post this photo of the other bogie as yet untouched...........You can see the bent tabs that constrain any lateral movement of the boxes...............You can also see what appears to be the axle ( oxide colour ) ..This is in fact a tube which passes through the box and locates against the inner race of the bearings... The real axle passes through this tube loosely and into the hub of the wheel... As I said---------peculiar !! My apologies for the slight out-of-focus but that's about as good as it gets from a 5 year old, £80 Aldi camera......

The original builder was obviously a man who had his own ideas about how things should be done.

Here's a few photos of 4930 Hagley Hall's bogie during restoration.......... The Bear's tender bogies are identical but shortened versions...

For all you GWR fans ( and those yet to be persuaded --LoL !!) please do take a scroll down this website of the Hagley Hall restoration.....The photos are crystal clear and taken by the various people actually involved in the project, so they are "technically sympathetic" you might say.... Enjoy !!......... www.4930hagleyhall.org.uk/news/news.html

Coincidently, I've been referring to those very photos over the last week, whilst modelling the Castle Bogie:-

Hello Nick and many thanks for posting those 3D views....Really helpful in remembering where all those parts go ( The Bear's loco bogie is the same one albeit from a Star in 1908 rather than a Castle from the 1920's..).. Just for interest sake if you look at Nick's top image you'll see there are two conical shaped items with a semi-spherical depression in the middle......These are free to slide on the triangular plate that they are resting on......In the photo below you can see a male semi-spherical shape attached to the mainframes......This is how the weight is transferred from the loco through to the bogie, suspension, wheels and track...... The 5 inch gauge versions follow that design quite closely on the loco but the Bear's tender bogies don't have that set-up......The weight is transferred as per the 2-cylinder loco bogie ie via inside sliding thrust blocks like this}----------

Hell everyone, Due to some "Contract" work recently there's only a small amount of progress with GWR No.111....... Here's the recently re-worked tender axleboxes being made ready for convertion and to receive their new, "normal" type Bronze journal bearings......... The centre-finder plug will be used when setting them up in the new 4-jaw chuck for boring.... Have a look at}--What I've done to-day thread.......As you can see from the sketch, it's the smaller diameter that needs to be opened up thus giving a decent wall thickness for the Bronze bush..

I now have the 4 axleboxes completely ready to accept the new, Phos.Bronze bearings.........material is on order........... here the first box is being "Clocked" in ready for drilling. The "Verdict" ??.............all OK.

Priceless !!............Shame he resorted to some foul languge towards the end.......... but lovable non the less..
May your God go with you...

haha.. yes, another fun program to watch, alas he has also gone to his maker and far too young too.. I watched him last week and laughed at the one where he met a man of the cloth and said: "You remind me of the blind man who enters a darkened room where there is allegedly a black cat inside. " "The cat doesn't exist, but you found it!".

Mixed bag to-day...One of the two orders for phosphorus Bronze arrived.......I've sawn-off 16 blocks of mild steel and faced one end ready to do a mod on the front of the axleboxes....more of that later on... Re-shaped the profile of the equalising beams to allow bigger clearances.....in the 2 photos the re-profile is on the R/H side------- De-painted by wire brush..This will do for now..I'll do a full chemical job later on.. A set of new suspension springs required and, after a nasty shock from a manufacturer who wanted £9 for P&P ( 8 springs that fit in the palm of your hand ! )..I found that 5 inch gauge buffer springs supplied from our good friends at Reeves were ideal, so duly ordered a set....

Continuing with the bogie mods.......... I mentioned earlier that the whole bogie rocked forwards and backwards because the thrust blocks were the wrong shape ( curved rather than flat ) and thus negated any suspension movement......... Here you can see what I mean, and the block of BMS now brazed on to rectify that situation....Finally there will be a strip of Brass soldered on to act as the rubbing face... This is just the first, trial one and eventually it will be tidied up....... Items are posed for camera ...

To-day's efforts were mainly to do with repetition work}---- 1) All the equalising bars are now re-profiled, de-burred and new coil springs bought..... 2) On the bogie mainframe, where the new rubbing block touches, there was a series of chese-headed slotted screws which clamped the top-plate to the frame---- these fouled the new block and had to be removed...Before doing this however the plate was brazed to the frame, the heads chiseled off and the bolts drifted out.....These will be replaced by short length dummy hex-headed ones soldered onto the plate... for visual effects only......Eventually ALL the screws will be replaced by hex-headed bolts.... 3) The frame was given a good power wire brushing prior to de-paint and bead-blast... 4) The pivot pin was removed....This will have to be modified to remove any weight support thus allowing only the 2 new blocks to carry weight....When finally finished these will be skimmed in the vert.miller to ensure equal loading and flatness....Then a brass rubbing strip will be soldered on...
