I am currently building a Talyllyn slate wagon based on the Blackgates design, but I am looking for some slightly better pedestals for the wheels. Since I am intending using the wagon as a riding truck I would like to fit springs. I have been looking at the Reeves/PNP pedestals which appear to be quite close, but the chassis is 1 5/8” rather than the 1” which these pedestals are designed for. Does anyone know where I can get castings for the pedestals which have a flange height of about 1 1/2” and a depth of 1”. The rest of the dimensions seem ok.
regards,
Simon.

When I made my slate waggon from the Reeves drawings I fabricated them in mild steel rather than buy the pedestals from Reeves

I've milled mine out of aluminium blocks. Which doesn't really answer your question.

Thanks for both the comments,
1. I am thinking about fabricating them from 5/16 steel strip 1” thick with a machined semi circle all welded up, then machined true, leaving the metal 1/4” thick. With a gun metal axlebox. Then fitting a cover of 3mm steel to male it look correct. But having never really done this I was looking for a casting first.
2. Sadly I don’t have any aluminium 1” thick or in your case square cut up.
i think I have seen posts on here showing both these wagons?
Regards,
Simon.

Yes - here's one of my posts: Slate Waggon postWilf PS - although I started with the Blackgates drawings, I'm using the Romulus (Reeves) ones as well.

And while I was searching, I came up with this - also from the Romulus drawings (which may be using the Reeves castings): Another slate waggonWilf Edit - Note that although the pedestal as drawn only has a one inch wide platform, on which the chassis sits, the chassis itself is two inches square - as you'll see on the picture of my chassis - although I've made my pedestals deeper.

Sorry I haven't got any pics of my fabricated pedestals available at the moment as my computer is still in the container with all my worldly goods en route to NZ. I made a front plate and then welded a U shaped strap to the back of it and a strip across the top of the U to make an angle section with the front plate. The axle box is a D shaped iron casting bored to take 2 narrow ball races. I will post pics as soon as my things are delivered.

Thought I would post a couple of photos. And a mock-up with the sides I am currently waiting for the sheet metal floor to be cut and some bolts/threaded rod to arrive. Simon

I have also cut and assembled the basic chassis. Drilled for the cross bolts. Also waiting for the wheel castings to arrive. Once the hardware arrives the body should be easy to assemble, but the chassis may take a little longer. simon.

Hi Simon,
Very interested in your project.
What wood are you using? Looks like mahogany? I am sort of familiar with the Talyllyn Railway slate wagons that survived, and have Alan Holmes' (?) drawings in John Bate's book 'Pendre Sidings'.
Can't comment on the Ffestiniog slate wagons, though JIC Boyd had drawings of same in his volumes on the Ffestiniog.
I've built a 5"g wagon of the LBSCR 'A' type as modified for the Isle of Wight. Was quite a'fun' project.
Cheers,
Julian

The wood is an interesting question. It is the remains of some double glazing which was removed from my parents house a couple of years ago. It seemed such a shame to throw away so much hardwood. The chassis is made from the wood cut in half and then planed to size, the sides are made from the window sill, I don’t think this wood was ever actually fitted, so there are no chance of any nails, but the chassis had to be inspected prior to cutting to ensure all the nails had been removed.
Regards,
Simon.

Hope you can see the image. This is the complete wagon prior to painting. It even matches the diesel quite well. Both just need painting now.
Simon.

Hi Simon, Sorry but the pictures don’t come up, for me a least. The flicker link just takes me to the flicker home page. Hope you can sort it.
