I have finally decided on the Sweet Pea, after learning a little more about it. I will probably build the locomotive boiler version, as I’ve heard bad things about the marine boiler. I will also probably remove the axle pump: I have one on my Tich and I generally find it gets in the way of everything. I prefer to use injectors.
I’ve been looking on the blackgates website and the links to the catalogue don’t seem to work. I don’t want to waste their time by calling them up. But to the point, does anybody know the rough price of a full set of Sweet Pea castings?

I will call them some point soon. I have been offered the drawings and build manual by another member of my club, so that’s one thing off the list. I will call blackgates when I get the drawings.

No, it was called Hayden. Not to worry I know there are few Peas with loco Boilers and the one from Beech Hurst being one of the first that I know of. It even had a brick arch!

MN Thanks Mike, Also, you mentioned to me that you have built a few oscillating cylinder engines. I have found a set of drawings for a relatively simple one, which I will start machining parts for at the working party this Saturday.

The people who slag off Sweet Pea boilers have probably never owned one. The only minor niggles are more to do with the firebox/grate. The baffle will burn away in a couple of hours if made of mild steel, stainless steel gets you about 2 afternoons worth of running. I have had good results covering the baffle with a layer of fireclay. I recently bought some 310 stainless sheet, it is rated at 1150 deg C (304 and 316 are rated to 925 deg C) The other slight niggle is the rear plate gets hot enough to remove skin, in low light it gets a dull glow. I have always found it to steam well and the fire is usually on the on the white side of red hot

For a beginner the Sweet Pea boiler is easy and straightforward as there are only 4 flanged plates and 9 stays. Due to the shape of the water space the water can circulate easily around the firebox

Blackgates are incredibly friendly and they will invite you to this years Sweet Pea Rally which are great fun and very interesting. You have to remember that they are all different and you will have to practice a grin of pleasure and endure an overnight camp! There is a current build of a Pea boiler on Youtube*, and Facebook friend Keith Appleton visits Blackgates and shows the bashing of the plates! Another guy is attempting to build one as cheaply as possible as the wheels can begin life as steel blanks cut from bar. He paid £30 for all the frame steel and even the tank if you wish to fit one can be built from steel and some weight added... The water being carried in a container behind or the tender that some people like. *Type in Mr Factotum to Youtube and you will be taken to his Meter Maid which is the 0-6-0 version that he is doing. 6 wheels giving a better ride than 4 with outside cylinders you can cut from blocks of cast iron from various places! Giving thrusts from each side in turn! Best regards David and Lily.
