I've made an overhead crane for the garage to help get the loco into and out of the van. The main gantry is made from 40mm x 40mm x 5mm steel angle, two rails running along the garage fixed to the rafters and a trolley that runs along those rails. The hoist came from Amazon for about £50 and appears to be the same one that was in Lidl recently for similar money. 100kgm lift, or 200kgm if using the 2-to-1 arrangement. I binned the two supplied fixing brackets and made a pair of arms from 25mm box section, and with 68mm dia wheels to run along the inside of the trolley fitted to angle brackets. As you can see, my welding is atrocious. And a couple of shots of it in situ. I shall sort out a spring-loaded cable carrier for it later. Steve

Pictures not displaying for me, Steve. Although I can use the URLs to see them. Looking good.

Brian (runner42) has said something similar yet they show for me. The only thing I can think of is that my website is not HTTPS. If that's the case, then I will abandon the whole record of the project as I'm not prepared to pay an extra £100 a year just to offer a secure website.

I think that some browsers have a setting that can adjust whether content from both secure and non-secure sites can be shown at the same time. I use Firefox and don't have a problem. However, I may have previously set a preference that allows mixed content but don't remember how I did it if that's the case. Sigh! ****** computers. Regards, Steve

Steve
I use Safari on a Mac. If I right click then I can view your photos a new window/tab, easy peasy. I don't think it is a security issue, I would guess it might be the HTML code you have put around them that normally tells the MECH screen to download and display the file. But that's the limit of my understanding and perhaps a computer expert might come along and help.
I am envious of your hoist, although I would be greedy and want one that ran X-Y across the load and work area! Perhaps a lot of steel 'I' section girders to achieve that.
I am making do with a two ton engine crane but the extended front legs and lack of rubber wheeled castors makes it a real pain to move about.

Nothing has changed at my end, Norm, I've been posting pictures and code exactly the same way for the last four years. The hoist does run x-y, 2.4 metres across the garage and 3.6 metres from the end wall to the up-and-over door rails. I've just hung two full gas bottles on it to check it moves with weight on and it works a treat. Regards, Steve
Edit: I've just checked a couple of older screenshots of proboards pages and they all show a standard URL in the address bar. Proboards is now HTTPS and I think that is what is causing the problem. If that's the case, I see no way round it. Does the pictue problem affect all readers on here?

Perhaps you are right Steve and it is a security issue linked to different browsers, apologies. If I fiddle with some settings in Mac Safari I can see your pictures here, but I cannot turn them on in the usual scrolling view. Edit - I have just looked and seen that all your pictures in the 5" Britannia thread are gone so I will have to fix this Safari viewer perhaps.
I switched to Firefox and the Britannia pictures are gone there as well, but I also find I cannot log in to the site with my user name, so I give up!
I now see that you have got full X-Y movement, excellent! Sorry, wasn't immediately obvious because I missed picture one. Do the pair of rails holding the motor have cross struts, or is the angle iron beefy enough to keep them together?

I'm using Firefox but can't see the pictures. Can't work out how to see them either other than using the URLs as Brian suggests. Ian

Ian I'm using Firefox and could not see pictures posted a few days ago but I did right click on the box where the image should have been and then clicked show image, the images were then shown and any posted after come up automatically, not sure whether that will help you Ian. David Thanks David, yes that works fine. I got an error message about the site which is why Firefox was blocking the images I suspect.

Looking a t the span of the rails and how relatively slender they are I would do as you said earlier and tie them together at intervals or fix them where ever you can to the roof/floor above. It might never happen but I would hate to hear the rails have sprung apart and you dropped something valuable to the floor. The angles may rotate enough under a heavy enough load to allow the carriage to spring them apart on those spans. Looks realy good otherwise. I dont havbe room in the ceiling of my garage for such a nice set up. Too much stuff hanging there already.

I agree, Jon, and Norm suggested the same so I will make a couple of bridges and weld them on at the 1/3 and 2/3 points. The motor carriage will run under them. I can add extra supports to the main rails easily enough but I dont think they will need it.

Hi Steve, That's a most useful arrangement, well worth the effort in my opinion. I did find the scaffold hoist on mine way too fast when lifting something heavy, even with the 2:1 reduction though. A free pulley on a shortened drum shaft overcame that problem, with a 4:! reduction overall. DSCN2311 by Roger Froud, on Flickr
