Hello Pete.
Just letting you know I have today unloaded two tonnes of the finest Welsh Coal down here in New Zealand.
Both Anthracite and the lovely Welsh Dry Steam coal, not to confuse them.
Helping to support Welsh industry! Another 12 tonnes to order now for delivery mid year.
It’s the best!!
Take care all of you up there.
Hayden

Pete, my only comment on your "ramblings" is how much better they would be with us all around a pub table and a beer! Keep it coming.
Thanks for the information all, I've ordered some grains, I'll see how it changes things if at all.

All this might be academic in a few years time.
A few private drift mines might still have a license to extract coal in Wales.

I'm going to visit a very good coal merchant in Swansea when lockdown ends and buy a good stock of it.

Dare I say it ??........ you could always consider oil or gas firing ??.......Commercially available DERV and Butane / Propane come to mind....If our locos are representative of the past then oil firing was certainly tried --- allbeit not very well done ---- so there is a precedent to follow.. Alternatively we could go for the North American 4-4-0 "Virginnia" type and use real wood !!......that'd make for an interesting IMLEC if nothing else !! en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oil_burner_(engine) .................... www.greatwestern.org.uk/m_in_gwr_oil_fire.htm

I reckon if I can manage 10 more years in this hobby that will be enough, especially with the 7.25" stuff. I will still have Juliet and then Mona needing seeing to (oooh Mrs!). Pete.

Maybe I need to work out my daily consumption. The kids will be moving out soon, then I get the coal bunker back!

Sadly, the opencast pit at Banwen at the top of the Neath valley has not had its licence renewed and subsequently will close. The pit at Glynneath, Aberpergwm, went on short time a few years ago before closing. There are a few private mines around. Gleision Colliery, the nearest to me, hasn't dug anything since the disaster. Open and working pits are getting few and far between. I think a trip to a Swansea coal merchant may need a phone call beforehand
