I like the dark stain finish on the lagging with the bright steel bands. I'm trying very hard to remain on task and complete the rail motor before going back to the beam engine. Sadly you posting all these tantalizing photos is not helping one bit.

Hi Jim, you're gonna hate me after this post. I have slimmed down my nuts to 5mm A/F and lengthened them, but I don't feel any side effects just yet... John

Stop it! Stop it now or you'll grow hair all over your palms and I'll never get 401 completed and running.

It was reported on the MEM forum that it was impossible to fit the valve rod without drilling a hole in the base of the steam chest to insert the thing, which required a plug. As I had to make a new steam chest I made a screw-in boss which makes it easy! I have to make some standoff washers the same size as the home made nuts otherwise the paint will be damaged. I'll finish this cylinder sometime soon!!!

This isn't the same engine as you're building is it Jim? Yours is the 'Australian' version or something?
Every time I ask Bruce about it I get an list of the latest challenges. You should probably just let him finish it first so he's found the traps for you!

Yes David the O B Bolton Beam Engine is almost identical and Bruce is right there are some 'challenges' in interpreting the plans as Bruce will tell you . I have the build series from Model Engineer but John's build series here is outstanding like all his work.

Cylinder Valve Gear - A simple machining job today: the Valve Shaft. The connecting rods sit on this via split shells, so the spacing and diameters have to be right. I'll put the taper pin holes in when I'm sure everything lines up...I never thought that a DRO could be so useful, after I'd converted all those 32nds and 64ths to metric! The only material I had near to size was this gungy stuff! Emery cloth and oil soon sorted it. I used the 2.5 mm parting blade to cut the 7/32" diameters. A 5/64" keyway was specified, but I only had a 2mm carbide slot drill, which worked a treat in the Proxxon at about 4500 rpm! Progress! Sorry Jim... John

Thanks John now I'm really envious as you turn 'gungy stuff' into a work of art that you can see your face in...mmm given my face it may be best I don't aim for your standard of finish

Just when you think things can't get worse they do but I must admit that was a good one John.

SNIP I have a spare set of balls for the governer if you would like them. I sent to a firm in the US for them and they very generously sent me too many. I don't remember them charging me either. I think there are some pictures of mine running on p24 of my thread. Ed Hi Ed, your spherical objects received today! My grateful thanks. John

Valve Hand LeverLooking at other people's examples of this awkward little piece led me to consider fabricating it. Here is the story... I made the wiggly bit first. Then I made the shank from 1/8" plate, turned the bit with a hole in it and filed the keyway. There is silver solder paste at the joint. A truly neat joint! Trouble is the keyway is in the wrong place. The story ends there as I've lost the wiggly bit somewhere in the workshop! It has disappeared from the face of the earth... I'll make one in one piece today, that way I won't lose any bits!

....and he shows us the photos of his wiggly bits with nary a hint of how he achieved it. My apologies, but I didn't show you the details of my wrinkly wiggly bits as I forgot the first photo! I centre drilled an extension piece which was supported by my super slim home made revolving centre, as you can see in the photo. After that I just used a carbide button tool, a half round file, and some patience! I then cut off my extension and polished the end of my wiggly bit... John

I fabricated a regulator and like you tuned the handle. Then upon parting it off I ended up with a short spigot which was rather useful. I drilled a small locating hole in the end of the lever and silver soldered it in place.
My handle was plane Jane in comparison to your nice bit of work.

Handle CompletedI didn't find the previous handle top, so I made another, brazenly stealing Keith's spigot idea. I'm very happy with it. I might recut the keyway in the right place at sometime, but not yet! If anyone asks if I made it from the solid, I'll say it's a complete fabrication!
