Valve Crosshead RodOnce again, I took the fabrication route as this is a horrid little piece to make from solid! I decided that I didn't have to copy the drawing, opting for a tapered cross head profile, incorporating threaded end caps so that I didn't have to slice the bronze bearings. I'm quite happy with the result. I have to solder the centre piece on tomorrow and polish it to the usual standard! John Bronze bushes pressed in and fitting nicely! I turned the taper profile afterwards. The width had to be 2.5". Close enough... I can live with this!

What do you find most challenging as a model engineer do you think?

What do you find most challenging as a model engineer do you think? Me personally? I'm a time served, City & Guilds qualified Fitter/Machinist, so hacking metal comes naturally. The challenge is in making things look pretty in the shortest time possible, and to still work properly!

It means we don't like people who come and stare at our work and then announce that its all wrong because the tender side has 40 rivets in it when it should only have 39. Particularly we don't like rivet counters who don't ever seem to have built anything themselves.

The reason for asking is that mine, which was inherited , has all square headed nuts and bolts . David

Square headed fasteners might well be representative of some mid Victorian practice, and so be representative of full size.

In an engine room, the nuts may well have been square, but in the belfry of our local church (I am the Tower Captain), the 'square' nuts are just hacked off a piece of steel bar. So they are actually rectangular nuts!

I find the rivet counters avoid my work; their brains would explode!

A photograph of David's square nuts would be interesting... Yes, I've got to make loads of square nuts for Locomotion, and I hate that sort of thing. They are just not avaiable commercially. I thought the model horsedrawn carriage and wagon people might have a spource, but apparently not.

Have you tried "Items Mail Order"? They advertise in the ME press and I think they have a website but you have to get the catalogue by post if I remember rightly. I am sure I recall some square nuts - probably in BA sizes - last time I had their catalogue which, I admit, was a few years ago. But worth a try?
