I’m trying to install the ash pan on the firebox. The instructions say “Secure using the rear mounting brackets that attach to the bushes below the fire hole.” The brackets will fit when bolted to the bushes but, do not mate up with the ash pan. Also, there is no drawing showing this attachment. I’m asking if anyone has experience with this kit and could shed a little light on how this should be done, Thank you, Steve M

Hi Steve.
Sorry, I can't help, but I think Adam Cro might be able to. He has either a Modelworks or a Winson 9f. but I am guessing they would be the same anyway.

Hi Steve,
I have to say that a lot of the instructions for the Winson 9F became very sketchy when it comes to the boiler and ashpan mounting arrangements. It was almost like they hadn't really figured out exactly how they were going to finish the job so put it in the 'too difficult file' a bit like a lot of other parts of the loco. I remember when these first came out and looking at the brochure that they seemed to be a good way of building a loco if you were of limited time and workshop facilities. I sort of got into mine by accident and will add that I have made a lot of alterations to it because a lot of the original Winson parts were not fit for purpose. The quality of fit and finish of a lot of parts is questionable especially for something that was made by CNC machining so cunning and guile will likely be necessary to make it fit. I have just done the ashpan and grate bit and the only original parts I used were the firebars which were modified to suit my new boiler and some bits for the ash hopper doors. Hope you can suss out a way of sorting this, it's all very frustrating. Adam Cro has done a lot of modification work on his 9F and may be able to point you in the right direction along with a couple of others on this forum.

Greetings, reading Tony's comments above, and about to complete my third rebuild of a Winson/Modelworks loco, I have to say I totally agree. I can't understand how they worked so hard to get it wrong, significant that one of the directors of Winson was disqualified from serving as a director for some years. My kits are all 71/4 gauge, an A3, a Britannia, and an almost completed A4. Each has been a nightmare, with new problems rearing their heads at every turn.. I am just about to fit the vacuum exhaust and find that the holes in the outer cleading and the smokebox do not line up by a country mile, and that is after I blocked the unneeded 2nd hole in the smokebox on the right hand side.
However, when these kits are "breathed upon", they do make powerful models.
I swear I will never tackle another kit, and will always stick to scratch building in the future.
Keep up the good work
Regards Brian B

Hi Steve, Seeing as I've been dropped in it by a couple I should pass on my (lack of) wisdom. Sadly I can't offer much help with regards to how it "should be done" as I threw the Winson one out the window. I ended up making mine from scratch following the Warnett pattern for the bottom half and then fabricating the flared sides to suit the boiler in quarters. At the moment mine is a snug fit to the bottom of the boiler with the grate fixed on two sides and a removable middle whilst sitting on the bracket that the boiler sits on at the front of the firebox but not fixed in any way. I can't get any photos at the moment as the loco isn't get but I'll try get some in a few weeks when we are allowed out to play and I can visit the parents where the loco is. Any questions I'll do my best to help but very little of my loco is original the very short list is: Main frame plates (all new correct stretchers) Horns Wheels (new axles and all new motion, brackets etc..) Axleboxes Cylinder Blocks (new liners, covers, valves, pistons) Pony Truck Boiler Tender chassis Tender tank (heavily modified) So yeah, not a lot let that came from Winson. Hi, I looked at my Winson 9F, No 030 and see that the ashpan is held at the backhead side with two hanger brackets. I think I had to make replacement parts. The top end has a hole which fits the clack valve mounting thread, with a nut securing the bracket. The bottom has a bent portion which fits the ashpan lip, holding it tight against the boiler foundation.
The original parts were too short. Send me a pm and I can email a photo of the backhead. Good luck.
