....Snip....I've organised our stand a number of times over the years, any of our members who were stewarding and were caught doing this, or using it as a free entry to the show and not stewarding at all, were not asked to do it again. Last time we did it we got £70 for our troubles from the organisers. We put on a huge stand with a lot of models, big and small. It was a mammoth task organising it all, it took considerable man hours to do, we burnt way more than £70 in fuel to put it on and we are only around 12 miles from the venue. Our club won't be going again, not for the lack of appreciation we get for the effort we go to. Understand Ed - I agree. It'll just die I think if both clubs and traders are disinterested. The clientelle had an amazing proportion of rude and inconsiderate people too. I won't miss it.

What the hell is wrong with some people?
I have just had a long conversation with my 2 daughters who work in the service industry and they say it is like a battlefield at the moment.
To think that also happens in a hobby environment essentially for old duffers is awful.

You pick the WEAPONS OF CHOICE UP last thing, surely?
Sadly we have 2 bodies visiting other tracks at the moment, and put in 2, yes Two days at Oxford returning home swapping models ready for a superb Sunday today. We were there for all 3 days and a superb banter between everyone. Evening meals sat outside together and everyone helping out even if it was to hold an ice cream momentarily while a dog got lifted up onto his lap. Dreaming Inspires indeed. I may be reading more into this but I do keep my ears and eyes open and observe the antics of some involved!!?? Thankfully being a professional machinist can blank out most of the current crap going round.
Much feedback from friends among traders told of the early change in attitude at Guildford!!!! They stopped going. It seems that some Nasty Bosses never retire They just find something else to be in charge of.

When I was on the door at our exhibition in Westbury someone shouted at me as they walked out "disgusting!" And complained that we didn't have anywhere near what he sees at other shows. We are not a big society, I guess Alexandra Palace was what he was expecting. When you are volunteering it's a bit crushing to hear people angry about something you spent the day helping with in your own free time.

When you are volunteering it's a bit crushing to hear people angry about something you spent the day helping with in your own free time. That's a shame. I've spent a fair bit of time on the SMEE stand at AP, Midlands, and Bristol, with a bit of time to wander round. My favourite was undoubtedly Bristol. However, it was also where I met my rudest "visitor", as it happens. I've spent quite a bit of time demonstrating the SMEE wire eroder, which is a fairly unusual machine outside a commercial workshop. Even at Bristol where there are a lot of visitors who work at Rolls-Royce, home of high-tech machining, I've had many fascinating conversations with guys who work with much more sophisticated kit than our home-built machine but who are happy to talk. Information flows both ways at these shows! But I was talking to one guy with his small son, son apparently being very interested and I try to pitch my explanation at my audience. Father suddenly said, "that's just a toy - I've just bought a proper one of these for my works" and dragged small son away - who was probably seeing something up close and personal that he would never see in a commercial machine. How much better to have said, "that's how our new machine at work operates", and generated some interest in the lad. Very much the exception, though - I'm going to miss the shows if they don't come back. Yes, a lot of work at club level to arrange and we club stand "minders" cover our own personal costs for attending - the only perk is free entry - but I had already volunteered for this year's Midlands show.

I'd like to see that machine in action, it's exactly the sort of thing I go to shows to see. Interesting stuff

It's a 2 hour journey each way but we both agreed we would do it again as we really enjoyed it. You'll never please everyone but you certainly pleased us and I'm sure an awful lot more. Ian

I have a current feeling that we will have to arrange various meet ups in abandoned car parks out in the wilds in which we all bring bits to show to the interested. Possibly setting out a day early for a track event or something. A bit like a car boot sale but in the warm summer months. I am thinking on bringing a pop up Gazebo to reading on the 18th of September next and bunging something under construction on a table for the viewing public... We got it from outside a neighbours house as they were moving and it was broken in the usual places. Just an idea. Several people smiled when I showed our Hunslet Regulator at Oxford. I explaining "That the only bits not made by me were the nuts and studding. One did ponder "Why on earth I would put a jumble of letters and numbers on a slide bar?" He got it when pointing out that it was a postcode. And that if 50 % of the model had such a thing marked it may be safer. DO KEEP A RECORD OF THE LOCATIONS, PHOTOGRAPHIC!

Some models may have several postcodes. DO!!!

We got it from outside a neighbours house as they were moving and it was broken in the usual places. That is effectively what Mike and I are doing at Guildford after they abandoned an excellent Model show and converted it into a 2 day track running event: We turn up with our second hand Gazebos and run/display various Model Engines. We get lots of interested kiddies, teenagers, adults actively engaging in conversation with us and their own club members lamenting that it is no longer a model show. If you don't have a good range of models at shows the youngsters don't realise that Model Engineering is a hobby that people can do at home and that there are cheaper things they can start to learn to make (that they have space for) other than just Locomotives. When I visit fellow modeler I normally look to take at least one model to show them Jo
