Esteemed colleague is working on a part built Britannia in 5". Here is the grate as received. He has made a mockup in cardboard (a bit like Steve's wonderful creation) but asks if the grate would work if he left it as shown in the photo below. In other words, would the ash fall off the side shoulders into the centre hopper due to the movement of the loco? Your wise advice please! 2 things really. First is that the grate as cast has very narrow air gaps between the bars unless your colleague intends spending some time opening up the gaps, which will also improve the ability of ash to fall through the grate.
Secondly the slope of the outer parts of the ash pan doesn't look steep enough to me for ash clearance purposes, unless the loco is going to do a lot of rocking from side to side.

Not prototypical for Brits, I know - but he could emulate the 9F and put ash-raking doors in the sides of the ashpan so that a quick poke now and then would persuade the ash to drop into the middle hopper.
