Hello folks, not sure if anyone can enlighten me but i am nearing the end of my 1st 5" gauge boiler build and a couple of queries have popped up. 1st is that on full size engines the rear of the boiler is supported on sliding brackets bearing on the frames, the Evans drawing show no such thing, how is the boiler kept level? 2nd the firehole needs a frame to support it but again no provision is shown, do people just design their own? Any help please. Many thanks.

Regarding your first point - that is exactly how model boilers are normally supported, with a second angle each side, fixed to the frame, and going over the top of the angle on the boiler. This means that the boiler won't bounce up and down, and you can turn your loco over, if you wish.
Not sure I understand your second point. Can you explain further?

I have heard of model locos where upward movement of the boiler is only restrained by the spectacle plate of the cab - not an ideal arrangement. Your Terrier may be one such design. On firehole doors: More modern designs incorporate soldered-in threaded bushes next to the firehole, for attaching the door. If it's not too late to incorporate these in your build you could consider them (in consultation with your boiler inspector, of course). In Julian's "Boxhill" thread ( link), he shows a top-hinged inward-hinging door of the Stroudley pattern. I think(?) he attached this onto the protruding stays above the firehole. I've not seen one, but a design was discussed here where there were fingers reaching through the firehole to clamp the door assembly to the rim. The old method, that is now very much frowned upon, is to screw the doors direct into the thin boiler shell. Wilf

I was going to reply, but Wilf (uuu) has provided a synopsis that I couldn't possibly provide via his link. How on earth Wilf managed to extract this without all the other posts at the time is way beyond me!
On my own Stepney, the rear of the boiler sits on a pile of steel on a short display track, except the boiler is off when my brother visited a few weeks ago. I intend to add a support for the firebox on the inside of the frames propping up the foundation ring, and held down by the front of the cab. The cab part was done a few years ago, but I haven't done the supports to the inside of the frames yet for the sides of the bottom of the foundation ring. I dislike the usual arrangement.
Cheers, Julian

You could also make a false back head which will allow you to put scale stays in the correct places. The door, which is hinged on the shelf above the firehole can be attached to this. It is held on by three bolts. You can see the two lower ones on my model. The top one is in the centre above the shelf. It also has the lever and ratchet to control the door opening - see page 4 of my 7.25 inch gauge Terrier thread. Ed
