Agree, as the lever would be unseating the valve to allow passage of steam.

Hi again everyone, I have just about completed my 9f with all the plumbing and cladding on! I decided to test it on air one last time with a half filled boiler before firing it up ! I found a few leaks so I stripped it back to the bare boiler and repaired those! I tested it again on air and Although the regulator was fully closed air and water was spraying out of the 2 cylinder feed pipes from the wet header. This to me is surely not right as I won’t be able to stop the wheels from turning when fired up ! My thoughts are there must be a fault with the main steam pipe from the regulator housing inside the boiler to the wet header! Could anyone please advise me where to go from here ? Or would you advise I replace the regulator with a ball valve as I have read somewhere this can be done ?? ibb.co/sVJqggR

Hi Keith, I had a similar issue with my loco after a long period of non use, although in steam, luckily I hadn’t forgotten to hold on to the loco BEFORE putting it in gear! I would suggest pulling the regulator & re-lapping or polishing the regulator, not knowing a 9F regulator I’m not sure how yours would work, if you can do both faces so much the better as a starting point. Mine had developed a noticeable “mark” on it, a couple of minutes in the lathe with fine wet & dry polished it out & a good seal resulted.
Cheers Kerrin
