We are looking at some fairly extensive renovation to our current house, much of which is around better insulation and, potentially, heating. You have to start somewhere so I did some really rough back-of-the-envelope calculations on heating costs. Took last year's gas bill, averaged out the summer consumption (assumed cooking only although there is a bit of water-heating in there) and subtracted this from winter consumption to estimate heating costs. Around 10KW average through a winter's day. Translated into current gas prices, that equates to around £10/day. A ground-source heat pump with an estimated CoP of 4 means electrical input of 2.5KW, at current prices around £9.50. But what's going to happen to supplies and prices in future, our boiler is old but of "built like brick outhouse" age where modern boilers seem to be even less reliable than washing machines, GSHP could use power from PV panels (but during the day...), just how much will better insulation save us and where best to put it - so many variables all of which are guesswork at the moment. And I would like payback period to be in my lifetime...
