Barrett Steam G1 GWR King

As some will be aware I placed an order for a Barrett King and thought that I would create a new thread to cover its progress when things get going. today I received the first kit which is for the tender and so will kick things off with a couple of photo's.

The kit was laid out to give some idea of the parts, it seems to all be there, Barrett includes a good checklist which I have browsed over but not fully checked individual items yet. Included is a set of colour instructions with a file to keep them in. I won't start anything until I have built the resistance soldering unit, plans for that are nearly finalised.





First impressions are good although shaping the body may prove taxing as the metal is pretty thick and not much in the form of fold lines to help although to be fair I haven't looked that closely yet and not being familiar with GWR perhaps all is ok.

Hopefully, I'll post some progress in the New Year.

I plan to create a thread detailing the RSU build...I think that I have everything I need, voltmeter gauge being the last part which arrived yesterday from China. I could only see digital gauges in the UK, wanted analoge.

I'm probably going to make a start on this soon, plan to try giving it one day each week to get started. The tender is first, mainly as that's all I have so far in kit 1, kit 2 is due soon. To help with the build I have ordered a very nice building stand/rolling road from Ed (model engineers laser) should have it in a couplr of weeks, Ed sold all his stock at the Midlands show this weekend. I knew that I should have driven down but at 1.80 ltr for fuel it would have been an expensive day when including entry.
Anyway, once I have the stand I'll post pictures.

Kit number 2 arrived this morning, I have only briefly looked through it but think the parts listed are there. Once the building stand/RR arrives I'll take a proper look at making a start. If so I may start a new thread in the main general chat area as it seems a bit isolated here. Unless members object that is?

Time for some light reading, approx 200 pages worth, I have ditched the arch file that Barretts provided and used one that's stronger and with more capacity. Just to brighten things up and remind me what I am building, I have made a front cover.



The assembly instructions are more like what you would expect in a plastic kit than serious model engineering, for example, there are no drawings other than to label the parts. Nothing is drawn to scale. I don't see this as being an issue as long as all of the parts are correct, any which aren't will be returned for replacement. However, I'm not expecting to have to do this, from what I've heard the kits by Barretts are pretty good, we shall see?



Once the riveting press and building stand arrive I'll make a small start, I note that according to the instructions, the first stage is to form the tender body. However, there is no mention of pressing the rivets out first? This could be to avoid flattening them, once I have the press I'll make a decision as to what order to do things as with the bends formed the rivets may not be reachable once bent? This will probably start as an evening job indoors and then move to the workshop for all soldering procedures, we shall see how things work out.

I've been giving some thought to livery, I have already settled for the single chimney. Looking at the possible liveries I'm quite taken with BR Caledonian blue, I did see a blue King at Didcot a few years back which looked superb. As for name? I'm currently thinking of King Henry V. A question for the experts, I note in reference pictures that there seems to be some form of fairing on the rear quarters of the smokebox. This isn't on the Barretts kit so I will need to investigate what this is?, any ideas?

So jealous of you having this engine to build, really wetted my appetite. So much so that it had me looking at an O gauge DJH LNER B17 that I have had in a cupboard for a few years and it is tempting me to have a go myself. I’ve even got the Sheffield Wednesday nameplates. 😉

Mike I have some O gauge loco's to build too...I collected the Hachette partworks model of Mallard which I have done some work on, might get back to it one day. I also have a lovely 'untouched' Martin Finney A1 kit including corridor tender to build. I have everything ready for it too, motor/gearbox, some Griffen castings for extra detail and precision motion gear. I also have a complete set of slater wheels for it.
I have a feeling that the O gauge may never get built, unless I find inspiration in building a layout one day...

One for you Mike, this is the O gauge Mallard by Partworks. This photo must be 3 years old now and nothing has changed on the model since, of course, me being me I was in the process of adding extra detail. IIRC I was in the middle of stretching out various sizes of copper pipe for fitting all the fine pipework. I also found a neat way of doing the gauge glass using sq section acrylic with a hole drilled down it's middle, this looks just like a protective gauge glass with the tube in the middle. Perhaps I'll get back to Mallard one day...

O gauge is such a great scale for a model railway, you can add so much detail, and have screw link coupling. I had started to design an auto coupling system using screw couplings....I think it will work if I ever get back to finishing it that is?

Ed just posted this picture on FB, one of these is for me, probably the lower one as I added the parts for a rolling road.....Ed's says they are being posted today, hope my riveting tool is also included... busy times ahead...

Ah, so one of those was for you!
I saw the picture too. I found it interesting as I've never seen the MEL jigs in the flesh, although Ed was kind enough to send me the drawings when I was considering the 3.5"/5" version. They look to be a nice design.

Hi guys.... Today I received the excellent building stand/rolling road kit from Ed (model engineers Laser) For now I have left the rolling road parts sealed in their respective bags, it will be some time before I need those. I have included in this picture the A4 lever arch file and loco frames for the Barrett's King to give some idea of size. I'll start the tender first which will have to wait a short while longer until the rivet press arrives, it won't be long though...🙂

I still haven't made a start on the model but today i paid off the outstanding balance. I had set up a 12-month standing order which finished last week leaving a small balance to pay due to me changing the order for the King. Part 3 of the kit is due in the next week or two...

Part 3 of my Barretts Steam G1 GWR King kit just arrived, two more parts to go for the complete kit. As for when I make a start on the kit is an unknown...hopefully soon after the house move and when a new workshop is up and running..🙂
