(As an aside, before I was 16 I was given Harold Holcroft's 'Locomotive Adventure' part 2. I still read parts of it with the same enthusiasm. It has certain chapters covered with my youthful pencilled notes.
Harold Holcroft was the conjugated valve gear expert for Walschaerts , but he also knew what was what in respect of Stephensons valve gear).

I, naturally, like/love/appreciate Holcroft's contribution to valve gear design, in particular his conjugated valve gear for 3 cylinder loco's.. Pete

Chapter 14 in the above mentioned Volume 2 of Holcroft provides, in respect of the SR Schools class, a sort of masterclass on lead with Walschaerts though a 3 cylinder loco but nonetheless highly relevant.
They had problems with the Schools starting from platform 7 at London Bridge.
They pretty much did as what Ross has suggested, and which I may have inadvertently and in error stated the reverse of here a few of my posts ago.
I am looking at page 279 as I type of volume 2 of Holcroft's book.
91 years ago in the case of the SR Schools!

You've given me an excuse to re read Mr Holcroft's wise words, which is never a waste of time.
