It was this (amongst other things) that made me decide to retire. I hate modern insurance company driven health & safety with a passion, come to think of it I hate some office bod telling me not to do something just because they perceive it to be hazardous. Danger is down to perception and if you have spent your life working in a dangerous environment, you don't get too hung up about it.

The final straw for mw was the requirement for a "Health and Safety File" at the end of every construction contract. Usually a Bankers Box full of (useless) generic information that no-one will ever look at. Pete.

Using paperwork and pointless rules as a substitute for common sense

Funnily enough the Health and Safety/O&M file required at the end ofa job (if properly prepared and thast a big IF) can be very usefull. Having had to go back to jobs some years after their completion to try and work out how something had been built and why it had failed or wasnt working as intended its often the only surviving paperwork thats available and saved the day. Trouble is that many just stuff them full of useles bits of paper (slump test results for concrete for example) just to say they have done it and done it to fulfill their contract. Having had to review a room for of documents for a printwqorks I can quite honestly say its one of the most boring jobs you can have. All you want to do is finish and get on to the next project. But some poor sod might be glad you did the job properly and provided the one bit of paper or information that he needed.

A bit like having model loco drawings with errors, it's a real pain when you can only find design plans for a building, and not proper as-built details.

I bet we all know someone who doesn't have that common sense though (it's never us....), someone who wouldn't have made it into adulthood without safety signs, guard rails etc. Often perfectly nice, lovely people, who are not bright enough to know that a packet of peanuts might contain nuts.
We have to cater to the lowest common denominator. A bit like the highway code stating stopping distances that most brand new hatchbacks would laugh at. But we don't all have a brand new hatchback.

When I was a kid...... I still am! If growing up means no longer playing with steam engines then I want no part in it.

I bet we all know someone who doesn't have that common sense though (it's never us....), ..... I taught both my children to ride a bike, and you couldn't meet two more different approaches to danger. One took everything steady, never venturing beyond what was within the acquired skill level - slow, steady, safe. The other - dear me - wheeeeeee - straight off the pavement across the road , and out of sight in the blink of an eye. Fortunately only one has take up motorcycling - although the other does ride a pushbike in central London. Wilf

Taxi drivers in London used to have two position accelerators.... On and off. How anyone rides a pushbike is beyond me... You're a braver man than me Gunga-din

"I bet we all know someone who doesn't have that common sense though " Like the chap who part sawed through the rungs of a wooden ladder 150 feet above the ground because he thought it would be funny. to give someone a fright . Hadnt thought about the potential consequences of his actions at all. You can imagine what happened to him.
Being made responsible for the antics of people like that by company 'safety training' is what made me give up site supervision when realy all I saw it as was making indivioduals reponsible to limit company liability.
