Here in NZ steel tyres seem quite common with a lot of people and suppliers using 4140 hollow bar to make them from. I will be going down this route with my 7 1/4” Wren once I get my new workshop built and fitted out. Yes, I did a set for a 7¼" gauge Ab loco a couple of years ago. The material is lovely to turn.
