I have received email replies to my enquiries from a couple of foundrys. Now, bearing in mind I want this item to be cast finish and not have to machine the o.d. (186mm) as that would spoil the effect, the first company said this; "I'd say make the pattern roughly 196mm, I'm guessing". This doesn't give me any confidence in them. Another company has quoted me £312.0. This will obviously be plus postage or petrol 2 ways, plus whatever time and money it costs me to make the pattern. They also suggested a 2% allowance on the pattern for iron which makes the guy who was guessing quite a way out.
So, I have decided that it would be a lot simpler and cheaper to make my model with the sheet metal octagonal fabricated version of the turret. It's been an interesting few days though.

Sounds like they are not interested, could get a whole set of engine castings done for that sort of money.
I allow 1% shrinkage for iron which is basically 1/8" per foot.

Stupid question time: Its not possible to find a Cast Iron cooking pot the right size/profile is it? Jo Maybe, Jo. But I've now gone off the idea of the cast item. Its fortunate that there are two versions to choose from. Compare the centre turret with the 2 outers below.

Maybe you could get to like the cast one agian, Just asked the foundry and it would be a fraction of that cost based on that 4.5kg weight. I'll message you with the cost.
