What an amazing loco!
Got to agree and say that the olive colour looks the part on the loco.
how many hours do you think you spent working on this loco

Hi Ian, She certainly attracts attention wherever she goes ;D I have to admit I sometimes look at her and wonder how I managed to build her. It's amazing what you can do if you set your mind to it and just keep plodding on. She is actually based on a 1930's design by LBSC from an idea by James Josslin who was into 'big' locos. Josslin came up with some real snorters, many of which finished up as 2½" gauge designs. One well known one is 'Uranus' which is a 4-8-4 tender loco. I first started cutting metal on 25/11/2005 and have worked pretty much continuously since then, often spending 12 hours a day in the workshop (I only work part time nowadays). It's difficult to estimate the total time spent but I would say possibly 5000+ hours. I would hasten to add that probably at least half of that time has been spent on the computer doing the design work and the CAD drawings. I chose to design the loco from scratch using just the basic outline and dimensions which made it a long build. I could have probably built her in a year if I'd just followed the original drawings and 'Words and Music' but they are somewhat 'vague' I don't think I would build such a complex loco again, certainly not in 2½". (famous last words : Next major project is a Simplex plus various smaller 2½" locos fitted somewhere inbetween. Ultimate aim is to build Don Young's 5" Black Five for which I have some of the castings already. John

If never feels like work though!
Its enjoyment all the way.......Only a few times have i ever felt like giving workshop a miss for the day only have that feeling pass half an hour later.
I am going to have the house to my self for two weeks very soon and i think i should be able to finish my project.
Good feeling....... But one project finishes and they next just rolls around.
What is this LBSC stuff i hear about.......do the plans come with instructions or and a cassett record for the music ;D.

LBSC used to call his written building instructions in the Model Engineer etc. the 'Words and Music'.
Incidentally, there are plans to publish all his 'Lobby Chats' and general articles together in book form. Not sure what stage this has got to though.

Hi John,
I think it was Brian who mentioned painting her in photographic grey like they used to in the old days.
When will a model engineer paint AND line out a model in photographic grey just to take a picture and then finish the painting and line it out again??!!
Only joking, Chris.

John, It may be a struggle but the results are worth it. Pics of Helen Longish at NWL 2.5" running day recently. Very impressive. Cheers Bryan

Thanks Phil, I seem to have ironed out the little teething problems now. I took her to the club on Sunday for a steam test and finished up running for 4 hours! It was great fun running around with the 5" guys who were a bit taken aback I think ;D Now, if you'd only put those 2½" rails back at Burton ;D John

My brother and I were talking to one of the members at the recent Midlands Fed rally and I'm sure they said that the original track had 2½"? It's a very nice track anyway. Dave Waldron from our club let me loose on his 5" V2 and I did a few very cautious laps - very different to driving 2½" stuff John
