Since this seems to be a mostly english populated board, I'll ask it here: are there plans around for a Bulleid Q1 in gauge1? If not, then in any other gauge?
Don't know why, but I like the looks of it.

Hi, I've just been looking at the website of one of our local clubs, and see that one of their members is building a Q1 in 5 inch gauge. Unfortunately I can't find an email address or telephone number, but see what you think, and if you are interested, let me know and I'll see if I can find a contact for you: Newton Abbot & District Model Engineering Society, Devon. www.nadmes.org.uk/pages/features/und_construct.aspGeoff

I have seen that pic some time ago, when looking on the net for info on it. I would appreciate it if you could find that. It would be a bit of work to scale it down and probably involve some changes liked to that. But it would be a great help to have some start.
Many thanks in advance.

Hi All
That looks like a super model of the Q1. I have had the privilage of working on, driving and firing the NRM's C1 during it's (and mine) time at the Bluebell. What a machine, very sure footed and one of the only engines I have driven where pulling the regulator open further on the move with a train behind actually pushed me back in the seat! There were a few surprising features for an 'Austerity' locomotive; one of these is the extra tender fillers which can be accessed from the cab. There are sliding covers in the tender side sheets to slide back and reveal smaller versions of the standard big filler in the top of the tender at the back. The water crane bag can be swung into the cab and filled in relative warmth and comfort. These were handy on the very rare freezing days (in Sussex) when it was too cold to leave the cab for too long! Of course Oliver also fitted steam reverse which, on this example anyway, was easier to use and set than the West Country/BoB or Merchant Navies seem to be. It was identical to the one fitted to the Maunsell Q so there may be a clue there? We had a freeze up problem on the Q1 and borrowed parts from the Q for a while.
Cheers
Brian

I'll do some 'phoning around in the next few days for you ;D

BTW. I used to watch the Q1's when I was on my way to school, as a youngster (1950's). Always seemed to catch my eye somehow.

Hi Havoc,
I've just spoken to the builder of the Q1 in Devon. He's been building it for 20 years now, LOL! If you send me your email address to my Personal Message file on here, I will send you his contact details.
Rob was very helpful, and says there are a number of Q1's up and down the country, but you may be better off scaling UP from something like the Hornby 00 gauge model, but he will tell you this. There is a 12 inch to the foot Q1 in the National Railway Museum in York, if you are ever in that area of England.
Regards
Geoff

Dear Q1 fans, I saw the model in 2000, in Newton Abbot, It seems such a shame that someone spending 20 years on a project does not publish his or her set of plans for the return for some much needed cash, towards the end, especially after paying so much for boiler/castings these days. I have for several years done my drawings in A3 so that they are easy to copy and are workshop friendly. 44XX, 517, and a simple De-winton all in 5" spring to mind. Dont mention the Duke. David Scott.

just looking through the posts and remembered my mates Q1 it's based on a 'Project' boiler and has twin cylinders. This shot was taken last year at Ally Pally on the G1MRA stand I also saw it running today at my club, she looks very realistic being weathered as well

I spoke with the maker of that Q1 in the picture he made a total of 6 at the same time I asked did build it to any drawings and he replied 'No' just an outline drawing, although it is a 'Project' boiler.

Hi Havoc, I went to the Model engineering show this weekend and saw a 31/2" Q1 I'll take some pictures tomorrow. The interesting thing is Polly Model Engineering are producing drawings in metric, cast wheels and a few other fittings for it. I spoke with the guy that has built the prototype and he told me it can be built with very little tooling and quickly he reckons for its size it's very powerful. I looked at the drawings and I'm sure PeterT on here could scale the drawings down to G1 or even 5" now that would be nice!

That would be very nice indeed! You are tempting me to biuld more engines than I bargained for. But if they do plans in metric I'll buy a set just to make sure that if I ever have nothing else to do I know what to start.
Like the prototype then. That was also powerfull using minimal materials. I looks like a good design in 1:1 translates in a good scale design. I wonder how much that can be generalised.

Talking with the guy today he said it was a bit tight for Stevenson's gear so he fitted joy valve gear and showed me how all the rods were straight so no machining required.

I looked at their site today but didn't find anything about it. Maybe a bit early.

Hi Havoc, Yes too early I spoke with PeterT again today (last day of show) and it's not been put up on the site or in the catalogue yet. He did have frames and wheels there and he showed me the drawings in A4 size he had the larger ones back at the shop I think maybe if you call him he can tell you more.

I'm in no hurry but I would like to make sure I have a set of plans You know, like when the organ is back together, the 5" is running, than last gauge 1 is finished, the garden track is laid, the Z layout done...that you are safe in the knowledge you still haven't run out of projects.
