Hi Matt I would second John's comment, don't use the drawings from either the book or the articles, there are quite a few errors that have been corrected in the latest drawings, for the same reason beware of old drawings on Ebay, I wish now I had taken a note of the differences as I progressed, it would have been handy information for others. I also started out as a fitter/turner many lifetimes ago, I don't think you will have any problems with Simplex, the only thing I had built before was a couple of Stuart Turner engines which did help me get my eye back in. Hi ron,
Wheres the best place to source new drawings from? are all the suppliers selling the current version of these drawings or are some still supplying older versions? how do i tell if it is the latest version?
I havnt had much experience in modelling, made a stewart single cylinder verticle steam engine with my grandad about 15 years ago, mostly been restoring old cars but have now seen the light. If your interested my lastest attempt is a 1961 chev impala.

Hi Matt I'm pretty sure I got my drawings from Reeves, I would have thought the UK suppliers would all be selling the latest drawings but it might be worth asking just in case they have old stock. The actual heading on the drawings are Nexus Plans Service Nexus House Boundary Way Hemel Hempstead Herts HP2 7ST Presumably they own the copyright so it might be worth contacting them direct. I also ended up in model engineering via classic cars, I was running out of space and money and thought it might be a cheaper hobby, not so sure about that now ;D. The last one I did was the TR6 just after the millenium, very small picture in my avatar. Ron

I built a Simplex at the time the original construction series was published. At the time I did not like the screw down type regulator and fitted a "Stroudley" type. Its steaming was suspect and as a result of a Don Young article about S. O. Ell's tests at Swindon on smokebox design so I re-designed mine. I also altered the ashpan floor to give a greater air space below the firebars. This transformed its performance and I ran it successfully on many tracks in the southern half of the UK. It is without doubt a very credible design and in my humble opinion suitable for the model engineer with limited experience or even as a very capable workhorse.
