Hi All. I'm in the process of building "Princess Royal" 2 1/2" gauge loco to a design by L.B.S.C. Ive got all the old blue prints and the construction manual but it leaves quite a bit to the imagination, due I think to the fact that the project was featured in "Mechanics" magazine circa 1930-40s which covered the complete job?. Does anyone out there have any experience of this loco, I'd be obliged to anyone who could help. Regards Jack Baynes.

Hi I rebuilt one as a non runner. The drawings do miss a lot out, but the more you make of lbsc's stuff the more you tune into the way he thinks.
If you have a specific problem, let me know Alan

Hi Alan, Thanks for your reply. At the moment I am assembling the boiler parts( quite a complicated item) and am getting differing ideas on the boiler stays. Do you know if the requirements have changed since LBSC's time. Thanks again and I hope you wont mind me talking to you in the future. regards jackbaynes

The boiler that came with the origional loco that i had, had been brazed and badly. as the Princess was not to be a runner i juct scrapped the insides. The boiler as drawn need a little to update it (if i remember correctly) mainly bushes. I have lent my drawings to someone at the moment, so i am unable to properly refresh my memory. It is a loverly loking loco and worth the effort to complete it.
Please, keep asking the questions. i am happy to help if i can Alan

Hi Alan, Hav'nt been on line for a while due to my PC being on the blink. Princess is coming along OK, still working on the boiler.Have completed the two main assemblies but am scared to join them together incase there are any internal leaks. Would be interested to know what you have, Regards Jack

I can understand your fear with the boiler. I presume you are woried about the combustion chamber.
The Princess i had was a rebuild as i have already said. I feel that it was a very early one, I estimate that it was built during the publication of the instructions. The problem was that some of the dimensions were not fully followed.
The only thing that i have are the chassis frames for the tender to the drawings that i had (currently on loan). I currently have them hanging up as a piece of interesting clutter. Are they any good to you?

Still having trouble with my laptop, have had to dig out an old PC from the attic to continue on line, hence the delay in replying. I made the boiler barrel from a piece of 4 3/4" copper tube but needed to taper it so I cut a vee along its length, rivetted a butt strap on the inside and silver soldered. It looks OK but who knows until the pressure test. I have not started the tender yet so I would be interested if you wanted to part with the chassis frames, you'll have to tell me what you want for them regards Jack Baynes

Thats fair enough, although the way I'm shaping these days a photo could be a long time coming. Given that the site doesn't recommend personal info how do we proceed. Jack.
