Wayne, There isn'y a point. There are any number of points! Nothwithstanding the expertise of Myford, stiffness( I don't like the expression) can be because of 1. A worn bed. A classical situation some 6" or so from the chuck. a, this can be worn not on the top as well as No1 shear. b. it gives a rounded edge. 2. the saddle might be worn- using the inner guide principle. a. it might have to convert to using the rear and probably unused No4 shear b if the rear shear is worn- Cleeve was first to remark on this. 3. the leadscrew can be worn, 4 the feed screws can be worn. 5. the clasp nuts themselves might need re=scraping to p[revent binding. They are only Chinese metal 6. the bearings at each end of the leadscrew might be worn. 7.the gibs might be worn or bound with chips.
I think that 7 possible faults is enough. Otherwise, I might have to come out of 23 years retirement- but my charges will be a bloody sight more than a Myford fitter's. They always were. Verb sab?

Once again I agree with all of your points now you have finally made some they are all possibilities, just as mine are,
Also Myford in the most Myford have sorted any issue out for me first time, I suspect from your tone and comments you feel the opposite
