"back to the topic.....Will hydrocloric acid from the pool shop be ok" quick answer dunno - try it ! Sulphuric should not be difficult to get , if you have an electro-plater in the area you could probably get 1/2 a pint-a-litre for nothing but take a dry glass container with a non-metallic lid , I took a plastic container which almost disolved during the two mile journey home. When you dilute it for use remember to add the acid to the water not the other way round , failing other sources you could get some battery acid - did some-one already say that ?

If you want some Sulphuric acid get some OneShot Drain cleaner - its 98% sulphuric acid - I use it for cleaning and pickling parts after seeing it on Bryan (Brozier's) website.
Cheers

My favorite place to look for files is the army stock places. There you can at least find files. Got a Nicholson "hand bastard" (4cm by 40cm usable) for 7.5 euro and a smaller bastard for 4 euro. A Tug of War "special" for 4 euro, a couple of small Talbot one for 0.5 euro a piece. At those prices I just take 2 of them.
Don't know how you guys label the Nicholson as being US made, all mine are stamped "Holland".

I thought drain cleaners were all caustic soda. maybe thats why they say DO NOT MIX WITH OTHER PRODUCTS. I am sure i will have to head to the shop this afternoon so i'll take a good look! Thanks everyone! Ian

Ian Even if the drain cleaner is caustic, you still need some to degrease the files!

The disposal instructions are interesting ....... does this mean after using it to clear your drains you should then pour alkali down them to neutralise the acis ?

Wasn't it the sulphuric that was supposed to screw the chemicals in the sewage works so we couldn't throw used pickle down the drains? ? ?

I understand that one of the biggest problems is the antibacterial handwash that everyone insists on using now. It kills the bacteria that decompose the s**t at the sewage works. Russell.

Coppersulfate is a big NO NO
Pickle goes green fairly quickly!
By the way its worth noting that 100ml of hydrocloric acid can change the Ph of 40,000 ltrs of water by 0.1
