Cylinder fabricationOne very large lumb of brass hacksawed to down to rough size. Said block milled down to size with the valve chest milled up as well. (roughly marked out). My intension is to bore out the cylinders to take a G.M. sleeve. The final cylinder shape will be done after the bores are done. ace

Ace - Nice to see the progress. Your photos have just given me an idea on how to finish off the front of the steam chests on my V4 Was this build serialised in Model Engineer? If so - what year? - I'd be interested in seeing the details.

Hi Chris
the steam chest parts have been machined down on one end and are now a press fit into the main body of the steam chest and will be silver soldered in place later. I am now hollowing out the middle. I will be tackling the cylinders tomorrow, so far its going very well and I am pleased with results so far. What did I inspire you to do then. That very nice chap Baggo managed to source the build plans for me. ace

Ace You've inspired me to fit a machined taper on the front. Turn the taper - mill away material, leaving the webs - attach to front of steamchest - almost like the real thing. As can be seen at this address on Green Arrow. www.yorksteam.co.uk/pages/v2-4771-green-arrow/070421/1212.aspV4 cylinder in the making - Chris p.s. something along these lines - but tidy.

Cylinder fabricationThe cylinders are now taking shape after a little bit of milling. just the left cylinder to do tomorrow and then the G/M inserts and pistons. The rest of the cylinder and steam chest parts should be done over this next week. ace

Nice work, looking good. I'm enjoying following your pictorial progress.
If, when you upload photographs, you select an upload size of 640x480 or less, if you can, then the picture will fill the page. If not, then I'll have to buy a 27" monitor so that I can see the full page without scrolling

A little furtherWhilst machining the pistons and rods I have noticed the plans show the end of the piston rod connecting to the cross slide is not threaded, nor is the cross slide. Is this an error or are they just press fitted together. My soldering is coming on, managing to achieve a nice neat run. The steam chest now soldered up and then valve spindle and cross head machined and fitted. I have to say that I am really pleased with results that I have managed to achieve with the cylinders so far, well chuffed with all the work I've done on the loco of it as a matter of fact.

Axle boxesI have knocked up a jig to hold the axle boxes so I can cut the slots, I have cut all six boxes in a matter of minutes with this jig. The boxes are located on a steel stud and held in place with the allen screw. Slacken of the screw rotate the axle box and cut the opposite side, took 2 minutes to cut one axle box. More importantly they fit in the chassis perfectly no sticking or binding. Most chuffed with this. ace

Cracking stuff Steve The build notes are not clear but I would suggest that the crosshead should be held onto the piston rod with a taper pin after adjusting the piston rod length to give equal clearance at each end of the cylinder. The crosshead boss is drilled and reamed a tight fit on the piston rod. That's the method I use. If you thread the end of the piston rod and the crosshead boss, it's difficult to ensure that the threads come out square and that the crosshead will line up with the piston rod correctly. John

Cheers John I think that sounds a better solution to what I had in mind, I was thinking that maybe I have to solder them in. ;D

After a brief spell of illness I have finally managed to get back in to the workshop. I have now completed the 2 crossheads, I had to machine these from a BMS block and what tricky little things these are to make the setting up time on the lathe and milling machine was most time consuming. ;D I will be tackling the rods next and hopefully the whole valve gear should be ready to assemble. Just need a new camera now to take some pics as my old/new camera has packed up.

A little more progress, both cross-heads now almost complete. I'm just waiting for a new slitting saw arbor as the old one doesn't run true enough for these parts, so its onward with the rest of the other valve gear parts.

Just a few more build notes.
Started work on the trailing axle suspension, made the leaf springs tonight and will attempt to mount the completed suspension tomorrow. This is very close to watch making as the rivets (1/32") that are required to mount the brackets etc will be hard to set in place and rivet over as well as holding the brackets in place. Hopefully I will have my camera back tomorrow and will take some pics. Next is the completion of the coupling rods if my order of stock arrives that is. Looking good so far anyway.

A little more work on my loco.I started work on the tender and have almost completed all the parts for the suspension. Mock springs in the making, I have altered the design of the suspension a little because I wanted it to have an active system.

Tender build
I am at present building the tender for my V2 however, even though I have the plans they do not give the dimensions for the main body just the chassis and diagrams of what it should look like, does anyone have any idea where I can obtain them, if there is any that is.

Tender Plans. Ace Wasn't a G1 Green Arrow describer in ME in the 70's Martin Evans I think. It'll be the same as my V4 Tender, but smaller. Chris
