Hi All What pitch should T slots be machined at? Or to put it another way what is the distance between the centre of slots on your milling machines or lathes if they have them? I am about to start making a boring table for the lathe to sit in place of the compound slide and I cant decide what pitch to put the t-slots at. thanks

I guess it would depend on the size of your workpiece and how many slots you want, or you could pitch 'em to suit a vise or other fixed mounting hole dohickey

Hi Andy. As Tel says, you might want to mount a vertical slide 'crossways', so the pitch would be important. For what it's worth, the pitch on my MaximatV10P built-in milling table is 45mm. Slot widths 11 and 16.5mm. Depth 10mm. Regards JB

Might take a bit longer Andy but have you thought about rectangular pitched drilled and tapped holes? Regards Ian.

HI Ian I had though about drilling and if I can do both I will. I've got a toolmakers plate which is done like that.
Tel and JB I'm wondering if there is a standard for T-slots. My kit seems to be all over the place, that however is probably more a sympton of the way it was aquired over the years. If there is a common size that seems to be prevelant then I might as well match it.

I am about to start making a boring table. Andy Shouldn't you be making an exciting table, rather than a boring table? ;D Sorry, just couldn't resist it!

Too much excitement is not good for us, erm, 'almost middle aged' blokes

Just had a quick scan round Andy and it looks like most (?) milling slides have 3 slots. Ian.

There seem to be as many different standards as there are machines. It depends what you want to fix to it. Many accessories have been designed for the Myford so, if it is a similar size why not copy that?
Russell.

I think it depends on the 'kit' you have or will have. I have a Denford bench top milling machine that usually has 1 of 3 items bolted down on the table. Vice, angle plate, or rotary table, unless I clamp to the table that is. Is there any commonality in the centres of the holding tools you have at the moment?. If so go with it. For what it's worth the Denford has 10mm slots at 50mm centres. Only 2 slots at that, but I find it OK. Here's a pic of it machining a cylinder to frame face.
