Is there any disadvantage to injecting oil/WD40 etc.
down the blast pipe and lubricating it that way?

I would think there'd be a possibility of squirting a bit of ash in with it, then you'd need to push the loco backwards in forward gear to get the WD40 into the cylinders - you'd also need a lot of WD40
