I thought it'd be interesting to run a poll on people's interests. Vote away.

A shame there is only one option available. I am sure many people, like me, are interested in several different catagories.

I know. But it is just the way the poll software works. Feel free to vote for your favorite and then expound in the thread

I don't know what's best. Taking years to build a working steam loco, or the first few minutes of the first drive of said loco. I vote for both, LOL!

I'm voting for the building of locomotives, I have only ever driven one 5" steam locomotive, that was a very fine Britannia built by Alan Stone (Bluebell driver now passed away) when I was very young. Now I am not so young and probably far too big a load for the 3 1/2" Tich I am building, so I hope my son James (or one of my daughters), who helps me in the garage and has built a stationary steam engine, will be able to take her out in the future. I was on the footplate roster at the Bluebell for many years and passed for firing at 17 (in 1978) I moved on to restoration projects, Baxter, the North London and the Adams, before moving to Ireland in 1992 and away from practical involvement unfortunately.
Cheers
Brian

Hello all, I picked locomotive building, simply because the range of metal working amd machining, is much more involved than building stationary engines, which is also an interest of mine. I am at the moment, like Brian, building the 3 1/2 '' TICH...frames completed with hornblocks and milled, buffer beams fitted and now working on the wheels and axels, there's two ugly looking big lumps of gunmetal in the kit, I wonder if it would work without them , I must ask Brian. All the best for now, John.

So 104 viewers and 15 voters to date. I think technically what is called a self selecting group!

t-v,
I guess most who voted checked back several times for an update, as I have done, and each viewing counted as a 'hit' on your topic.

Hello Viffer, 10.00 pm. looking at your poll.why are the tick selection boxes not showing to enable a vote to be made?. Shortly before I made my post, the boxes were showing and I selected loco build, the boxes then disappeared never to reappear. Could there be a glitch in the system? thus not letting many possible voters make their selection. All the best for now, John.

Probably they vanished after you voted, lancelot, to stop you voting multiple times ("Vote early vote often" doesn't apply here!)
gwrfan, I think the system knows where you live and only counts one person's visit no many times he or she reverts.
Do I give a monkey's if people look but are too scared to vote? Err no.

Mr Viffer, Yes, your Poll knows that we have voted before, haha, but still logs up a 'Read Message', each time one revisits, just like your other, err, Poll? ? Guys, I think we should club together and buy Viffer a new toy for Christmas, hahaha. Geoff in gale-torn, torrential rain-hit Cornwall.

Can I have a 7.25" Britannia please? If you are clubbing together it won't be much each. I know, I know they never did run well out in the west but still a tasty loco.

I voted for locomotives, although my interest encompass most firms of model engineering. Locomotives, then steam non-loco, then tools, probably puts them in order for me.

Guys,
I had to go for "Something else" sort-of meaning everything else but including some of the current list.
It was also looking very lonely plus I scored a massive 4.5% of the vote.
Oops! Forgot to say what.
Locomotives: Got the bits for Reeves "Locomotion". I once saw some old film of the 1925 reenactment and just got hooked on the sewing machine effect. Also, growing up in the mid 50's with either a level crossing or under a bridge to negotiate they scared the crap out of me. On hold until I'm skilled enough not to screw it up.
Model (harmless) weaponary: 1851 Colt 'Navy', Gatling Gun, Saxon sword.
Others include Whimshurst machine, pulse jet, IC stationary (H&M), passing interest in clocks various, the list goes on...
As for all you lurkers: get registered and leave your mark.

I've just voted:-Something else. (Please say what) What = whatever happens to turn up. I suppose I am a bit of a cheat classing myself as "M" E , when really it is every thing from building cars, motorcycles, bits for my friends Marshall tractor etc etc (incuding things to keep management happy).

I have just tried to vote on your poll "card", but it does not seem to record any votes, so, here goes, i have built loco's in the past, "maid of kent" ," bantam cock",and a 0-4-0, industrial loco, based on one that ran on the steelworks near my home, before i was married, now i concentrate on unusual stationary engines(my latest was ,posted on here, cutousy of our freind ,TEL, ). at the moment i am painting it,after wich i will post a pic ,on this site. Next project i hope ,(fingers crossed), to have a bash at a clock.
So ,Viffer, I this is a great idea of yours , and, i wish you all the best , i hope it proves to be a huge succes. Steammadman

I feel a bit of a fraud voting for steam locomotive building, although it is present tense rather than past tense, so that's correct. What I mean is, I've never actually built one, just keep making sub-standard parts. I've never finished my clock, so I could not vote for that one either. There isn't an option for "buying more lathe acessories in the hope that my workmanship will thereby improve", which would have been the most relevant. Perhaps that's what "armchair engineering" really means?
