And of course,the GWR scrapped at clearances other companies built at!I can remember when you could hear LMR and SR locos coming by the clanking noises coming from the motion,but ex GW locos were remarkedly quite...except,of course during the last couple of years of steam on the WR,when we lived next to the Didcot - Oxford line.Mind you,then we only noticed the trains when they wern't running,it was the lack of noise kept you awake at night!

Yes, I would have to agree with a couple of otheres, the vertical mill gets my vote.
I always found trying to get pieces set up on the lathe, to try and use as a milling machine took ages, and I was never overly happy with the end result.
Now, setups seem easier, accuracy is excellent, and sofar finish has been good.

I voted something else cos I've got a horizontal mill with a vertical head adn a slotting head.... doesn't get used as a vertical mill much but when you want to cut a gear in a hurry.........
