One good or bad point about the VSL is it has an L type spindle nose. Good: it's a rigid mounting which runs happily in reverse. Bad: unless you get a set of chucks with it, the backplates are uncommon and expensive. (Whereas screwed backplates and even D types are common and therefore quite cheap.) On the general question, having owned a Super 7 and an 4.5" AUD, I'd go for the Boxford every time - just lift them both to feel the difference. Even better (another notch up, and surprisingly no more expensive) would be a Colchester Bantam 1600 or 2000, if you can house and move it. (This is purely for turning though - no milling accessories available as far as I know.)

Regarding sealing the lathe bed to the cabinet, mine just used household silicorn sealant
