Could somebody enlighten me as to the pro's and cons of caulking with soft (high temperature) soft solder. I have a very persistant leak, unfortunately it between the firebox and barrel. It is not a coal fired boiler. It is not going to be run "in public" and hopefully 300 degree solder will/ may answer the problem?

High melting point soft solder such as Comsol is perfectly acceptable for sealing a small weep provided the actual joint is sound. It obviously has very little strength so shouldn't be used for anything structural. We still use Comsol for caulking firebox stays in 2½" gauge boilers where it is often extremely difficult, if not impossible, to silver solder them due to the very narrow fireboxes.
The problem is that once you have used soft solder, you can't do any further silver soldering (in theory) but why would you want to anyway?

Could you supply me with them. I am willing to pay of course! I have the Model Engineer series, Many thanks for your reply.

You can get the Comsol from Reeves or Maidstone Engineering. Also Cup Alloys do their version (Cupsol). It's quite expensive for what it is but you don't need a lot! I use ordinary Bakers fluid for the flux although I think most soft solder fluxes will work.
Re Green Arrow - I was only able to help with the ME articles which you already have and not full size drawings.

steamboater Baggo (John) supplied me with the ME articles which are proving to be a great help for me. The plans for the G1 scale Green Arrow are available from My Hobby Store. www.myhobbystore.com/c/96/Plans---Locomotive.html?Page=2They are listed at £29.95, they are good quality but rather big. ace

The plans are also available from Walsall Model Industries.
They can also supply the frames, wheel castings, tender axleguards and cylinder casting if needed.

Just a thankyou to all who have answered to this post, one small question? Could the Green Arrow be built from ME articles (alone) Just really trying to save a few shillings towards the boiler material!!

I hope so steamboater because I've already started my Green Arrow. Although I think I may be tempted to by the cast cylinders but I will be contructing the rest of the parts including the boiler myself. Anyway there is always good advice and friendly folk on here that will assist with the build I'm sure.

The drawings in the articles look pretty clear so you shouldn't have any problems just using those. The full size ones will only be 'full size' versions of the article ones anyway. The only thing is that the full size ones may contain corrections if there were any mistakes in the original articles.

I will try to post updates as and when I have done work on it with photos, plus let you know if there are any hidden problems with building parts that I come across. I have already decided to knock off a few small parts that I can machine up and practice my silver soldering on like the water pump, displacement lubricator, exhaust and steam tees etc.
