Dear all
Last weekend I finished silver soldering my Tich boiler, I then fitted all the blanking plugs and pumped a few pounds of air into it. To my great surprise there was only one leak, a small pin hole in the foundation ring. Now this is my quandary do I re-flux, re heat and silver solder it up or do I caulk it with soft solder? My friend tells me that once a copper boiler has been soft soldered you can’t then do any further silver soldering on it, but hopefully I shouldn’t have to. If I go down the soft solder route what’s the best alloy to use, plumbers lead free? Any tips would be gratefully received.

Hi Paul,
I had a similar issue with my Spencer boiler. A couple of the stays had pin holes.
Have a word with your boiler inspector - mine advised Comsol (melts around 300 degrees Centigrade) to block the very small leaks. You can cause more problems than you fix when you start re-heating....
This was because he was happy the joints were all secure.
I'd get a bit more pressure into it to be sure the boiler structure is sound before you use Comsol. I think I went up to operating pressure in stages. Ideally use water pressure rather than air!
Cheers Bryan

Bryan
Thanks for the info, I will be seeing the inspector this Wednesday and I will have a chat with him. I just checked and they sell comsol at the club, I hope it will do the job I dont really want to go for a re-heat unless I have to.
Regards
Paul
