All,
This being Christmas eve, and with her Ladyship smearing butter all over a turkey, I thought it inappropriate to slink off into the workshop. Still, it does give me the opportunity of wishing all of he members of this forum a very happy Christmas and a New Year crowned by successful ME projects;D.
Since a request was made for contributions from the less vocal, here is one, although its about nothing in particular. I have been struggling with a LBSC Virgina now for quite some time and had all but reached the stage of chucking it in a corner and taking up stamp collecting or macrame. Everything had gone reasonably well up to the valve gear (although I did have to play around with clearances between the spring hangers and wheels - ended up recessing the frames slightly and cranking the hangers so that the backs of the wheels didn't miss them by half a thou). What caused the problem was the eccentrics
I first made a set as per 'words and music' but the piddling little grub-screw just kept slipping. I was then reduced to bashing the wheel off and trying a bigger screw- same result. Off came the wheel again and this time I tried a set that were slit with a clamping screw. These were better but the eccentric straps in bronze had a tendency to suddenly bind. Wheel off yet again and the decision that a new axle was needed since the old one was beginning to look like the end of a cold chisel. I finally made yet another set with bosses, each fitted with three socket headed grub-screws. Bingo!! They not only hold, but the straps rock back and forth perfectly. I have left off the axle pump eccentric so I will have to finish the tiny steam pump described in 'Shop, Shed and Road'. Now that's a real bit of watch-making!
Why do we inflict this kind of thing on ourselves?
