If anybody is interested, I will be attending the open weekend event on the Saturday 11th July with the Duchess of Sutherland along with 3 others. 4 Duchess loco's in steam all on the same day, now that will be a sight to behold.
Regards Mark

Will do Mike. Going to give the Duchess a run this Sunday at Nantwich as I have done some mods so I want to see the results before going to Southport.

There was a 'Duchess' running at IMLEC on Sunday painted in light Blue some of you guys may know the engine unfortunately he didn't even finish the course not sure if it was engine failure or bad driving.

The 'Duchess' running at IMLEC on Sunday was Roy Gregson's beautiful BR 46223 "Princess Alice. Roy was unlucky enough to suffer a heavy rain shower during his run. Severe slipping meant that he was only able to complete 4 laps of the track. Roy was still running after the 25 minutes minimum time and was eventually placed 16th with an efficiency figure of 0.4%.
Despite inclement British summer weather on the Sunday, IMLEC 2009 was a really good event.

Regards, David Hi David, Was you there ,I also ran on the Sunday and had the same bad luck as Roy the rain poured down for my run so we sat it out for about 20 minutes then I had to run on a wet track I was slipping for at at least the first 2 laps until it dried out.

Hi Spamcanman
Yes, I was there on the Sunday. Sorry to hear you had the same bad luck as Roy, the weather seemed to get worse as the day went on. As you say, at least things dried out pretty quickly when the rain stopped. I went purely as a spectator, but was lucky enough to ride as a passenger with Tony Guerrier and his Torquay Manor, great fun and many thanks to Tony for his generosity.

Neil Mortimer with the heavily modified Polly III from Ickenham (Run 1) clung on at the top of the leader board to win, The SAR 15F of Andrew Giffen from Reading won the 3 1/2inch competition and Len Steel with his Britannia won the Previous Winner event. Sorry I don't have the efficiencies to hand. Will try to get them.

Hi Tony
It was a pleasure to meet you, what a small world! We stayed to see the scoreboard being finalised, but left before the prize giving. I did take a picture of the scoreboard. From the picture I took, efficiency figures were as follows: 1st Neil Mortimer (Polly III) 1.35% 2nd Dave & Paul Tomkins (LNER B1) 1.34% 3rd Alan Crossfield (GWR Prairie) 1.28%
Andrew Griffin (SAR 15F) won the 3 1/2" class with an efficiency figure of 0.87%
Len Steel won the previous winners class with an efficiency figure of 1.54% and Brian Remnant came 2nd with 1.39%

It was a good run, The saturday was much drier and my run was mostly in sunshine. Like Tony I wonder in hindsight if I shouldn't have taken another couple of passengers. .
Mind you, the grade to the station was very slippery and I usually had to moderate the regulator so I crested the top at walking pace most times, so maybe with many more on I might not have made it up there. The grade to the tunnel was no problem, not a single slip there.
Had my run been earlier in the day, I might have tried 20. The 3.5" rail was almost perfectly rusty, although with the occasional blob of oil no doubt from the inside gear of previous 5" locos, so I probably had it easier than the 5" locos, with both 5" rails nicely polished before long.
The engine is not tuned for efficiency competitions, the blast nozzle suits the demands of more sporadic public running, needing to draw the fire quickly after standing waiting for passengers. Maybe an adjustment needed for next year if accepted again...

I believe that the main problem with the lovely blue 'Duchess' was an injector failure.

Surely a loco of that quality has 2 injectors and maybe an axle pump I only have two injectors on my 'Manor' and they both work faultlessly when needed so never needed to fit a pump!
