Gentlemen and Ladies. I note from Stockport and District M E S website, that they are. Quote "the best model engineering club in the country," Yet they have no track and no club house. Is this some sort of con ? Is it true, are all the other clubs a shambles. Your comments would be interesting and what can be done. Their Chairman has refused to remove the entry.

I'm not going to name and shame, and I know it can't be true in all cases, but a great track often makes for a lousy club.
If they have survived being moved twice, they must have a pretty good spirit to keep going.
Good luck to them I say.

I know one of the members of Stockport MES personally and have spoken to him at length about the problems that they have had with losing their present track site (through no fault of their own). The fact that they are still going after such problems is a credit to them. I don't see why their present lack of facilities should be a cause for criticism.

Many, perhaps most, clubs started their life with meetings in members homes, and visits to members workshops, and grew from that.
Even in the days when property was less in demand and prices much lower than now, finding and affording suitable premises for a clubhouse and a track was a monumental task.
It isnt the facilities that make a club, it is the members and their enthusiasm.
Given the problems of losing their site, it is to their merit that they are keeping going, and, I have no doubt, seeking alternatives. Full power to Stockport and I wish them well for the future.

We at Newton Abbot have just about finished our 3 rd track in 60 years, and as you say it is the club spirit that keeps you going. Being able to join in and dig with a gang on an empty site, then go and have a run on the opening day is just perfect. Even more perfect is choosing a day that is sunny to hold it.
Meanwhile virtual runs could be made in various car ports, and many excellent meetings and evenings have been at friends houses with a warm dry engine up on rollers and plenty of tea to hand. Oh is it raining outside?
Good luck to you Stockport.
David.

I actually think the club is doing great especially surviving without a track or accommodation for so long. The point I was making, having visited and run on many fantastic tracks around this country and come into contact with so many pleasant and helpful model engineers how does this club come to the assumption they are way above everyone else.

But the very best 2 clubs in the country are the Itinerants, and of course s.t.e.a.m. virtual clubs with no track etc etc.
Who mentioned grapes.

Steamintim,
Discussed your posts with fellow members yesterday, whilst we were building up one of the cutting sides on our new track. On the whole, fellow members were happy that you are in the south and therefore unlikely to join us!
Enjoy the sun,
Waggy.

Thanks to all for your kind comments.
We are about to complete the turntable and steaming bay areas, another couple of weeks and we'll be able to handle large loco's without lifting!
I think I'll be taking over the website fairly soon, until then if anybody would like to visit to run or for a chat, I'm on

Thanks again,
Waggy

Gentlemen and Ladies. I note from Stockport and District M E S website, that they are. Quote "the best model engineering club in the country," Good for them if they think so - especially if they believe it. However, we all belong to the best club in the country - otherwise we would move, would we not?

I think its a cracking club with good determined members. I'll certainly be joining in the new year when subscriptions are due. Like it has been said, the best club isn't the biggest track or the one with the most passengers!
I think its fair to say its not fair to pass judgement if you haven't been to the club. If you've been, you can form your own opinions from there. I think to any club there are good and bad points as no club is perfect and not all of the members/visitors can be happy or accomodated for.
Regards
Dan

Hello Dan,
Why wait? Subs won't be due until end of April next year. You may miss out on the Christmas and Easter barbeques, both cooked by Sam and Ella! We're there Wednesday & Sundays, come and have a brew.
Regards,
Waggy.

....... You may miss out on the Christmas and Easter barbeques, both cooked by Sam and Ella! Regards, Waggy. Are you going to invite us all to the BBQs? Many of us are free during the period and can travel. We are prepared to become day members in order to comply. Please tell Sam & Ella. Please give plenty of notice, so the guys from around the world can make suitable arrangements. Only kidding.

I'm hoping to pop down soon as I'm a member at sale and already know a few of the members from there. When you start running, I'll pop down for a visit.
