Hi Everybody There are plenty of suppliers of kits or completed locos but I haven't had much success at finding plans for a simple DIY 4 wheel battery loco suitable for a youngster to drive, I'd rather have a go at building one from scratch if anyone can suggest a source of plans rather than buying a kit or a complete one. [which seem rather expensive to me for what you get ] Ron

The dutch assocation of model builders has the plans for a 5" "Sik". nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bestand:Sik_Spoorwegmuseum.jpg The set of 11 pages is numbered 20.02.010, costed 78.88 euro in 2008. Doesn't look simple however, lots of rivets. They'll be in metric of course. Don't know how good they are, only saw the loc running. www.modelbouwers.nl/index.phpAnd I tought there are plans for a german Köf (at least there is a kit).

Thanks Havoc, but it's something much simpler than that I'm looking for, a DIY along the lines of Maxitrak's Ruston without the price tag! Ron

The Maxitrak 4 wheel chassis looks relatively good value to me, by the time you add up the cost of the bits you will probably have to buy anyway - motors, gears, controller and I'm sure you could knock up a simple body quickly enough - don't want to slow progress on the Hunslet Andy

Hi Andy I hadn't noticed they sold the chassis separately, I'll give that a bit of thought, there's no great hurry, the clan's about to expand slightly so I've had a request to build a battery loco suitable for small children. The Hunslet's coming along nicely, the second cylinder got bored and faced this afternoon. Ron

Several years ago now deep into 2 Hunslets, I looked into a very simple design that a complete beginner could do with an absolute minimum of equipment and have come up with the S.I.M.P. design, steam, gas engine, and of course battery electric and on the 040 chassis could cover her in any sheet metalwork you care to mention.

David Pardon my ignorance but WTH is a S.I.M.P. design? Ron

That S.I.M.P. is a design that David is doing and which he is now teasing us with for some time. As far as I can guess the S. is for Simple. But I can't make more of it and he manages very well to keep it veiled. Probably when the prototype is finished and approved we will know more.

Hi the design is all about managing to build something that is great fun both in construction and running. Almost every construction series assumes that we have a fully equipped workshop and the writer usually says something like, for example,
"Set the item up in your universal dividing head and machine at 15 degrees etc"
No, this is based on having saved up for a drilling machine and a small lathe, and set up in the corner of a room, no castings, and straight forward machining. So far I am very pleased with the results and have finished the trolley. This also doubles as the tender and again stripped down to very basic parts. The water is carried in a 5 liter container for example.

If any one would like ddrawing for a freelance 0-4-0 in 7.5in/7.25in gauge i will try to make some up from my loco. I used 1/5HP 12/24 VOLT motor with chain drive. No castings needed if you have a lathe. I am only home about 2 to 3 days every 2 weeks, plus i have a 7.5in gauge RR to work on, but will do my best. PM me for photos.
