I saw 5199 in steam today at the Bluebell Railway and took a lot of images of various bits of detail - this is just to set your hearts racing! If you want to download the full picture (it's 12MB big!) then right click on www.modeleng.org//images/prairie/IMG_3080.JPG and save the linked file locally. I'll put some pages together for the detailed pics in due course. Cheers Andy

And towards the end of the day I managed to catch this pic as they were taking on water I thought it was rather evocative Andy

Thanks - I have had several PMs saying they liked it - not sure I should give up the day job yet!

Forget the engine for a moment, what got me going was the ad for chnlove.com at the top. Dont tell my wife, but yes thank you for the inspiration.
What we still need is a cordinated effort with some of the jigs and bash over bits that we all make and need to be offered as a swap for another part that someone is producing in a batch for example, or may be getting laser cut etc. So possible these days with the contacts through the computer.

David. Good idea David ... my biggest worry at the moment is machining the cylinders ... I'm not confident or capable enough to do that so will need help. Anyone got any ideas for what they need and would benefit from a batch run? I'll check out some water/laser cutting if that would help Andy

Yes the cylinders are a great worry, as are most expensive castings these days, and this is one of the reasons for machining and welding bits together to form the 51XX cylinders. This I was inspired to do once I had discovered the castings were indeed of cast steel. Then you get the possibility of welding holding pieces in place for clamping to cross slides etc then cutting off later. as once the outer covers are on you will not be able to tell the difference, unless you wish to turn all the ribs in as well. The end covers are a reasonable price from Reeves and in cast iron.
Now to batch production, one of the difficult bits is the pressings covering the cylinders at the top, rocker arms and the rear corners one left hand and the other right handed for the bunker.
Then all the machining of the rods. plus an instruction manual on say the best way and sequence of drilling the brackets and riveting the frames together, as was done on the full size. Laser and water jet some popular items as Reeves should have offered as these came avalible through the years.
Quite a wish list, but in batches as you say eases the pain. I did cut out the coupling and connecting rods ready for machining several autumns ago, but am waiting for practice in cnc to do them.
David.
