I have a few of Ernie Winter's drawings for 5" gauge - this tanker is a scaled down, modified and simplified, version of one of those. I may have some others here - I'll have to look. www.ejwinter.com.au/plan-cast.html

Yeah Paul, that's for the 5" version. Castings here are a shocking price now. Fortunately on G1 things are a bit easier (one reason for the change) I was going to turn the wheels but, good fortune smiled, as she does occasionally, and I got four axles with suitable wheels on Oztion for the princley sum of $15. Wheels are now on, also buffer stocks and partially completed coupling blocks - going with link and pin coupling as both locos I've got started are set up that way. (also, the blocks are easier to make than hooks )

I understand and applaud your decision. I did the same thing on the waggons I'm building right now.
Is that angle alu that you used for the frames?

Yes mate, some 1/2" x 3/8" aluminium angle that I had here. Scored a bundle of al. sections from a bloke who was moving to Sydney not so long ago - first time I've got to use any of it. The tank bolsters are from a bit of 5mm plate from my regular offcut guy.

The tank is a piece of 65mm pvc pipe, with two modified 50mm end caps for the ends. Progress to date

Some dummy axleboxes (2 sets) cast in polyurethane resin, and the start of a master for station name boards

Tel, two questions, why the dummy axleboxes? How are you going to spring it, if indeed you are.
Secondly, where is the straw going to be put, for obviously you will have the tank filled with falling-over-water, and need to refresh yourself whilst driving.

No plans to spring it at this point AJ, the 'real' axleboxes are part of a subframe that bolts inside the frame proper - shaped like a veeeery wide 'U' . It will be easy enough to adapt it for coils springs hidden in the thickness of the subframe should it seem needed once the thing is in operation. Straw? I was thinkin' axle pump to deliver that Glenfiddich Throat Lube to where it does most good

Thanks Abby, now all I have to do is wait for my mate Dick (who actually has some track on the ground) to get back from sunny Brisbane to give it a trial.

Nice looking car. I love tank cars, but you see then seldom. Time for a whole string of them?
