Frame of Project loco coming along now. Axle pump, Boiler and lubricator purchased, cylinder block/piston/valve chest etc. fitted. Wheels mostly turned and connecting rods being tackled soon. Daft question of the day today concerns how the boiler is fixed to the loco! Smoke box mating ring to smoke box on saddle around cylinder block on frames - think I get his part? But how is the back end/rear of boiler/fire box held/attached to frames/Belpair fire box etc? I have looked through the book and also the 3D eDrawings and cannot for the life of me see this anywhere All guidance gratefully accepted! Regards, A

The boiler needs to be free to expand with the heat and contract when cold. She should be "connected" at the smokebox end and sliding at the back.

It is normal practice (both in full size and smaller gauge) to fix the boiler rigidly at smokebox end and have sliding arrangement at the firebox end to allow for thermal expansion. In the case of "Project" the bit of the text that is eluding you is this: Chris

Nice to be able to help. How come you are asking here instead of the usual G1 hanging out places?

I have learned a lot from all sections of this forum, so like to use it where possible, especially as it has the Gauge 1 section - which I know is not terribly "busy", but the help I have had on here on Gauge 1 and other matters has been very good (IMHO).
As matter of interest, which other sites do you think are worthwhile for Gauge 1? I have joined G1MRA and the G1MRA Forum, but my initial view (possibly quite wrong!) is that it seems to cater more for the experienced G1ers rather than beginners like me.

Can't comment on G1MRA forum, because I am not a member and their forum is "closed shop". Which BTW I think is an error, but it's not my business. There is also uk.groups.yahoo.com/group/FS32SGrailways/ which is interesting if you are into fine scale, but will not help you much with building of steam loco. There is also fine place run by Union Steam www.unionsteam.co.uk/forum/ - that would be useful. The reason for my question was curiosity, because as you say, there don't seem to be natural place to gather for the lone wolf operator (not a member of G1MRA) interested in smaller scale steam locos. There is a yahoo group - steammodelloco16mm that is fairly active. It is aimed at 16mm NG modelling, but most active members seem to have a foot in the G1 camp, too and are all very knowledgable. Many have built project locos, too. Quite tightly moderated so you'll have to be careful about sneaking in G1 questions at first, but a very friendly group.

Yeah, that's not a bad place and I am sure many G1 guys cross over, while following NG aspect of the hobby. I am also sure that they would not mind occasional OT (as far as being not 16mm) question, but ... it is not the natural place for G1 guys to congregate. I would still prefer that G1MRA be open (at least for reading if not to post) for outsiders, but like I've said it's not my business. Both ME Clearing House G1 and Union Steam seem to be the best alternatives for "free range" guy. Chris
